Henrietta and Willis are the parents of: ~Wilson ~Mary ******** Mrs. Henrietta Brouwer, age 95, of Hull, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, August 4, 2015, at Aspen Heights Assisted Living in Hull. There will be a funeral service on Saturday, August 8, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Hull. Interment will be at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Henrietta, the daughter of John and Hattie (Gunnink) Calsbeek, was born on December 4, 1919, at Hull. As a young girl, she lived with her family on a farm near Hull. She attended and graduated from the Hull Public High School in 1938. On June 19, 1941, she married Henry M. Vander Spoel, and they lived in Hull. Henry went to be with his Lord on November 15, 1944. To this union one son was born, Allen Jay. After Henry’s death, Henrietta received her teaching degree and went on to teach in a country school near Hull. On June 3, 1947, she married Willis Brouwer. They made their home in Hull, and she worked as an office manager at Hull Feed and Produce, until they retired in 1975. Willis passed away on October 29, 1979, in Willmar, Minnesota. After Willis’s death, Henrietta was hired at the Iowa State Bank in Hull and held various positions at the bank. She lived in several houses in Hull during her life and on September 1, 2014, she moved to Aspen Heights. She was a member of the First Reformed Church of Hull her entire life, and that is where she was baptized and made profession of her faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As an active member, she directed choirs, taught Sunday school classes, and participated in the women’s organizations. She also provided special music with Willis and several women’s groups at various events, until she became hearing impaired. Henrietta volunteered at Pleasant Acres in Hull for many years and was the treasurer of the Hull Combined Appeal for 25 years. Her hobbies included playing cards with friends, traveling, and needlework. She crocheted many afghans and made beautiful cross-stitch pictures for her children and grandchildren, as well as friends. In the last ten years, when her hearing loss prevented her from hearing phone conversations, she learned to use the computer and iPad, which enabled her to communicate with her family and friends. She also valued the time she spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by two children: her son, Wilson; and her daughter, Mary; a daughter-in-law, Barbara; and a sister-in-law, Marlene; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Allen Jay Brouwer (Vander Spoel) on February 27, 1983; and two brothers, Gerald (Jeanette) Calsbeek and Franklin Calsbeek.
