Description	:	Henrietta Rose was born Duchess (Fishkill, Dutchness County), New York. Sept 20, 1841. She had fourteen brothers and sisters, all of whom preceded her in death. She lost her mother at an early age. She had fourteen brothers and sisters, all of whom preceded her in death. She lost her mother at an early age. There were also six half brothers and sisters, through her father’s second marriage When a girl she removed with her parents in a covered wagon to a farm now included within the limits of Chicago, Illinois, then some time later to Iowa settling in Allamakee County. In the year 1866, she was married to Dr. Robert Small, who had just returned from the Civil War, where he had been commissioned assistant surgeon in the United State Army. Dr. And Mrs. Small began their married life life at Rossville, and later moved to Clermont, then to to Ossian, where he practiced for seven years, and from there to Decorah where he practiced for eighteen years. To this marriage were born two sons, Laurence M., and Frederick B. Fred died in Decorah at the age of 21. Not long after, in 1894 occurred the death of her husband. Seven years later she removed to Waterloo where she continued to live until January 1921. At this time she came to Ionia and made her home with her son, Dr. L. M. Small. They were greatly devoted to each other, and it was in his arms that she died on June 27, 1926, at the age of 84 years, 8 months and 7 days. Besides her son and wife she leaves three granddaughters to mourn and miss her; also three great grandsons. In early life she became a member of the the Methodist church, in which she continued until coming to Ionia. Here she joined the Congregational church.
