Bailey was born on June 11, 1865 at Richmond, Va., where he spent his childhood, and there attended the public schools, remaining until he was 18 years of age, when he was attracted by the railroad and engaged in that avocation which he continued during hi life. Coming west he worked for the main line roads and while located in Iowa was united in marriage to Miss Lydia Ellen Walton who was living not far from Corning, Iowa. They came to Nebraska where they resided for about two year, southwest of Omaha, and then with the wife whom he had married on June 24th 1887, returned to Richmond, Va., where they made their home for two years, returned to the west and to Nebraska, locating in Alvo in 1892, and have resided there since. He was one who helped to build the Rock Island into Lincoln. Early in life Mr. Bailey united with the Methodist church, although his folks were all Presbyterians, and has ever maintained his membership in this organization. There were born to this union three daughters and one son, the daughters being Mrs Henry Clapp, Mrs. Charles Jordan and Mrs. Ruth Appleman. There is only one grandchild, Bobby Clapp. Mr. Bailey was retired from his work and given a pension a few years ago. He had been in his usual good health until Tuesday, August 21st when he was taken ill, and continued worse until Monday, August 27th he was taken to St. Elizabeth hospital in Lincoln where he passed away at an early hour on Tuesday, August 28. The funeral was held from the Methodist Church of Alvo on August 30th with a service at the home at 2 o’clock and at the church at 2:30. The services were conducted by the Rev. McKenzie, pastor of the church. Vernon Bennett sang at the services while Vera Lancaster presided at the piano. The pall bearers were selected from his life time friends, S. C. Boyles, S. C. Hardnock, Carl Johnson, Jess Hardnock, C. F. Rosenow and L. D. Mullen. Interment was at the cemetery north of Alvo.” Memorial tribute published in The Plattsmouth Journal (Plattsmouth, Nebraska), Monday, 3 Sep 1934, page 6.
