Dessel, was born in Germany and came to America at the age of seven years with his parents, who settled on a farm in Winneshiek County, this state. He came to Ida County in 1881, locating at Ida Grove. While here he occupied himself at various clerical positions. During the first term of Grover Cleveland's administration, he was made postmaster of Holstein, where he had been residing for a number of years., serving with credit to himself and the administration. In 1889 by reason of his fitness for the position, he was nominated as county auditor by the democratic party, and elected at the polls by a handsome majority. His services that he was re-elected and served his fourth term.
