Description	:	Hank Jacobs was what his kids called a "rough man." He told it as it was and didn't mince words. He grew up in a traditional Dutch household where hard work and strict devotion were the norm. He married Elizabeth Vink, a kinder, gentler person, and they were blessed with a large brood. He told it as it was and didn't mince words. He grew up in a traditional Dutch household where hard work and strict devotion were the norm. He married Elizabeth Vink, a kinder, gentler person, and they were blessed with a large brood. Sadly, though, in June 1934, while far into her last pregnancy, Betty developed Strep throat which threw her into toxemia and heart failure. She and the baby died. Hank was left a single father of a large brood on a truck farm during the Depression. Life suddenly got very hard for the entire family. Children were split up. Some of the older kids got married to get out, but in exchange had to take some of their younger siblings with them. He spent a lot of time in the bar. Just a couple of years later, he would commiserate with Rose Nearing, a recent widow who likewise found herself a single parent with young children during the Depression. She also had to find family members to take in her children so she could take any job that came along. She would roll cigars much of the day, clean his house and cook meals for his kids during the late afternoon, before going to the bar to cook meals, serve drinks and clean up in exchange for enough money to save up to go out and see her kids on Sundays. When Rose and Hank married, they merged all of their children into a small farmhouse without nearly enough beds for their extended brood. The hayloft in the barn was turned into one long bed with all of the boys lined up like cigars in a box. As my dad described it, no one really got much sleep at night because you had to nudge the brother next to you to roll over so you could roll over. But for any one to roll over, everyone had to be nudged to roll over. Sleep in the Jacobs loft was an exhausting affair. Hank may have lived hard and worked hard, but he died pretty quietly. He is buried between each of his wives with Rose's first husband, Ed, on the end. More than one of their sons joked through the years that it was payback for all those years in the hayloft, except that it's harder to get the person next of you to roll over these days.
