Griswold, of Bay City, a guest of the Hotel Congress, committed suicide in his room this morning by taking a dose of carbolic acid. He was about 20 years old and registered as C. E. Foster, of Cleveland, Ohio. ------------- The foregoing telegram was shown to A. B. Griswold within five minutes after it came from the Associated Press. He read it without appearing to realize its seriousness. He then read it again and as the truth dawned upon him he was very much affected. "That is a terrible thing," said Mr. Griswold. "It is terrible. What shall I do? I am ready and willing to still do anything I can for Harry. I have always done so. He has had a good home. I have secured employment for him a number of times. He went away without any provocation whatever. He remained away a long time without letting me know where he had gone or anything about him. I decided to let him rough it and learn what it is to run up against the cold world. But when I received a telegram for financial help I sent it to him and brought him home. I got him a position with the Bay City Gas Company and supposed he was satisfied, but he went away without saying anything and now has been gone three weeks. I had made up my mind to let him stay away and give up trying to make him contented, but I could not do it, and I arranged with detectives in Detroit to find him, that I might get him to come back to Bay City. They could not find him. Day before yesterday I received a telegram from him dated at Schenectady, N. Y., asking for money. I sent it to him immediately, and this is the first time I have heard of him since. It does not seem possible that this can be Harry." Mr. Griswold received a telegram this afternoon from Judge Wilkinson, of Detroit, an old friend of he family, which said he had called at the morgue and seen the remains of the young man. He could not identify the body as that of Harry. Mr. Griswold has his doubts about the suicide being his son, saying he does not see how he could be in Detroit and Schenectady at about the same time. Griswold, who is reported to have committed suicide in Hotel Congress this morning, was a son of A. B. Griswold, jeweler of this city. Young Griswold had a hobby of running away from Bay City and keeping his parents in suspense for several weeks, and then writing or wiring for money with which to return home. He seemed bent on seeing the world, and his father was inclined to let him see it, but every appeal for money brought a favorable answer. Three weeks ago the boy went away for the last time, apparently without cause or provocation, and nothing more was heard from him until Monday when his father received a telegram from him at Schenectady, N. Y., asking for money. The amount asked for was sent immediately, and nothing more was heard from him until the news of to-day came. The father of Harry says he has grave doubts as to the Detroit suicide being his son. The Detroit Free Press Detroit, Michigan Thursday, 2 August 1900 page 3 ========================== YOUNG GRISWOLD COMMITTED SUICIDE ------------- SON OF A WELL-KNOWN BAY CITY MERCHANT TOOK CARBOLIC ACID ------------- Despondent when his prospects seemed bright, Harry A. Griswold, of Bay City, yesterday morning took an ounce an[d a] half of carbolic acid in a room at the Hotel Congress, and a short time later was found dead. The young man arrived at the the Hotel Tuesday night and registered as "C. E. Foster, Cleveland." He retired seemingly in good spirits. About 7 o'clock yesterday morning a bell-boy knocked at the door and young Griswold answered. Two hours later when Griswold did not get up the boy repeated the knock and receiving no answer, he crawled through the transom and found the young man dead in the bed. The carbolic acid bottle beside him told the story. He was identified through a life insurance policy in his pockets. Griswold was 22 years of age. He was a son of A. B. Griswold, a crockery and jewelry merchant, of Bay City, and [...] in the Bay City Gas Co. office. A week ago he disappeared and his father tracked him to Detroit. He was heard from in Cleveland and at the time threatened suicide. Once before he left home suddenly and was found in Columbus, O. His business affairs were in good condition and no extreme morbidness could be assigned for [his ...] act.
