Description	:	Henry came to Ohio in 1805 with his parents and lived in Hamilton Co, OH until 1837, when he came to Lee Co, IA. Here he brought a farm on Sugar Creek, 2 miles Northwest of Viele, IA. Henrys obit: APPLEGATE- At his home in Jefferson township, on Sunday Dec 4th,1881,at 12:20 p.m., Henry Applegate age 87 years 2 months. The subject of this notice was born in Pennsylvania September 8th 1794, where he remained until nine years of age and then went with his parents to Ohio where he grew up to manhood and entered upon lifes active duties and labors for himself. While yet a young man he was married to Miss Annie Colshier, and the first years of their married life they spent on Gen Harrison's farm with whom he was intimately acquainted. Mr Applegate was like many of the other pioneers and early settlers of Iowa, a man of energy and enterprise, and he and his family set their faces westward and in 1837 they landed in Iowa and settled on land on Sugar Creek about two miles northwest of Viele. Here he put into cultivation a good farm, and was permanent and useful citizen until death. Mr Applegate knew by experience what a bitter sorrows of life are. A short time previous to 1850, death took from him the companion of his youth, Some years after he married the widow Rudisill who still survives, although somewhat feeble with age. He was the father of ten children- eight sons and two daughters, seven sons and one daughter still living. Mr Applegate suffered much for about twelve years from a cancer on his face and was deprived of sight for about ten years. His last days were full of severe pain and suffering, but he bore it all with Christain patience and said he was only waiting to go home. He was a number of years a member of the Baptist Church. In politics he was a staunch democrat, a man of firm character. His funeral was well attended by neighbors and friends. Five of his children were present to pay the last tribute of affection to their aged father. His remains were laid to rest in the family buring ground on the farm.
