Feb. 3 – The community mourned the death of one of it’s earliest settlers and highly respected citizen, Mr. Henry Arnold, Sr., whose death occurred early last Thursday morning, Jan. 28, 1916, at the family home in this city. The news of his death was received with sincere regret by his many friends in Delaware and Dubuque Counties. Mr. Henry Arnold was born in Canada on Dec. 25, 1838 and reached the age of 81 years 11 months and 3 days. When a young man he came to the United States, settling in Delaware County, Iowa, finding employment at the home of Mrs. Hugh Reid. In 1859 he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Reid and several years after their marriage they moved to the farm in Northfork Township, which they had previously purchased, and which was their home for many years, until they retired and came to Earlville to reside. Ten children blessed their union, eight of whom with the sorrowing wife survive to mourn the loss of their loving husband and father. The children are John, Edward and Henry of Earlville: Charles Independence; Fred, Captain the U. S. A., stationed at Yellowstone Park, Wyoming: Mrs. Ella Fuller , Independence: Mrs. Cy Kenny and Mrs. Will Sharp of Earlville. The burial took place Sunday afternoon, at the late residence, and was held under the auspices of the Masonic Lodge, Rev. Wiggins conducted the same. The floral offering were numerous and most beautiful and the large attendance at the funeral, friends coming from far and near, gave testimony of the high regard in which the late pioneer was held. Burial was made in the city cemetery. Thus another of the early settlers of this vicinity has passed away, one who labored zealously and tenaciously for the development of this territory one whose life was filled with noble self sacrificing deeds of charity and helpfulness to his friends and neighbors. Coming to this country when it was still in it’s primitive state, he found d the path to the civilization and advancement of the country, anything but rosy, but his energetic spirit never swerved, regardless of the disappointment met with and he labored on towards the goal of his ambitions and lived to see the wild country changed into one of the most productive and cultivated sections of the state.. In his home Mr. Arnold was always loving and considerate and his death calls forth the heartfelt sympathy of his numerous friends which is extended to the bereaved wife and children in their hour of sorrow.
