Haerther. _ 71, of Atkins, Dies BENTON COUNTY NEWS （Special to Daily Times) _ Atkins. May 21. - Henry A. Haerther, 71, died Sunday evening at 6 o'clock, at his home in Atkins after being in failing health for some time. Born May 5, 1874 in Germany he came to America with his parents in 1883 and settled south of Norway in Iowa county. On Oct, 15, 1896, he married Marie Schanbacher. The couple farmed south of town until 1911 when they moved to a farm southwest of Atkins, retiring in 1929. Besides his wife, Mr. Haerther is survived by three sons - George, Christ, and Paul, all of the Atkins vicinity, and two daughters - Mrs. Marvin Moeller of Boone, and Mrs. Henry Rathje of Newhall. Other survivors include a sister, Mrs. H. Rinderknecht of Atkins; a brother, Wm. G. Haerther of Atkins, and fourteen grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Marie who died In 1916 and Mrs. Walter Behrens who died in 1944. _ Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at St. Stephen's Lutheran church in Atkins with the Rev. G. Rickels in charge. Burial will be in the Lutheran cemetery near Atkins. ______________________________ Henry A Haerther was born in 1874 in Ehningen, Germany. At the age of nine years, (1883) he came with his parents to America and settled on a farm four miles south of Norway. Per the Glazier & Filby book "Germans To America Vol. 46, "Heinrich" sailed on the ship "Wieland" from Hamburg and arrived in New York May 23, 1883. The book indicated they came from the Wurtemberg Province. In 1896 he married Marie D Schanbacher. A 1900 Iowa County plat book shows Henry and Marie lived on the Haerther home farm which is in section 4 of Lenox Township, is 1 mile east of the Lenox Cemetery and then north on the east side of the road. Six of their seven children were born here on this farm: Marie, George, Christ, Paul, Emma, and Louise. Besides farming, the family did custom threshing, corn shredding and corn shelling. They owned one of the first automobiles, the tires being made of hard rubber. In the spring of 1911, they moved to a farm southwest of Atkins whose location is on Highway 30 in Sect 33 in Fremont Township in Benton County. Here Esther was born. They retired from the farm and moved to Atkins in 1929, the same year Emma and Paul were married. Henry served as mayor of Atkins for two terms. Per the Atkins Centennial Book, dated 1982, he served as mayor from 1931-1936 and 1940 to 1943. German marking on tombstone: Selig sind die das wort Goites hoeran und dewahren.
