Description	:	Mr. Henry B. Hammond, Jr., 91, died Thursday, April 17, 2014, at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House in Rock Hill. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. Larry Twitty officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Born in Fort Mill, Mr. Hammond was a son of the Henry B. Hammond, Sr. and Bessie Starnes Hammond. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. Larry Twitty officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Born in Fort Mill, Mr. Hammond was a son of the Henry B. Hammond, Sr. and Bessie Starnes Hammond. He graduated from Fort Mill High School. Mr. Hammond joined the guard in 1939 and received promotions after going to Fort Jackson, eventually becoming a staff sergeant. He was in the core that went to Iceland as an instructor. A ski patrol was formed and Mr. Hammond became the leader. He also served in England, Germany and France. After the war, Mr. Hammond helped reorganize the unit and became its commander. He retired from the guard as a captain after more than 46 years of service. Mr. Hammond was a member of the Eli Bailes American Legion Post No. 43 and the V.F.W. Mr. Hammond was retired from Celanese Corporation, where he worked as a mechanical supervisor. A member of the Catawba Masonic Lodge No. 56, Mr. Hammond was a Mason and a Shriner. He was a very active member of Flint Hill Baptist Church. He loved working in his garden and cutting grass. Surviving are his daughter, Susan Crowe and her husband, Barry of Fort Mill; his brother, Richard Hammond and his wife, Carolyn of Edisto Island, and James Hammond and his wife, Thelma of Fort Mill; his sister, Doris Shealey of Rock Hill; his daughter-in-law, Vicki Hammond; four grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Faile Hammond; his son, Steven Hammond; and two sisters, Lib Adams and Thelma Duncan.
