In 1878, at the age of 18 years, he emigrated to America, coming to Iowa where he stayed only a short time. From Iowa he moved to Dodge county, Nebraska. In 1895 he was united in marriage to Anna Wilkens. To this union were born 10 children, two of these preceded their father in death. From Iowa he moved to Dodge county, Nebraska. In 1895 he was united in marriage to Anna Wilkens. To this union were born 10 children, two of these preceded their father in death. Surviving are his widow, three daughters; Mrs. Louise Rehling, West Point, Mrs. Carl Schmodi and Mrs. Wm. Krueger, Bancroft; five sons, Henry of Wisner, George J. and Harry of Pender, Raymond and Martin of West Point; one brother in Germany; 13 grandchildren and other more distant relatives. Deceased came to Cleveland township, Cuming county, in the year 1895, where he lived for 33 years on the Tonjes farm south of Pender. When, due to ill health, he found it necessary to retire from the farm he moved to West Point where he lived at the time of his death. Mr. Tonjes had been in rather poor health during much of his lifetime, twice he had typhoid fever, about five years ago he suffered a severe attack of the "flu" and since that time never was a well man again. Kidney trouble with other complications developed recently and this was the immediate cause of his death, which came to him Oct. 11, 1933, at the age of 73 years, 8 months and 3 days. Those attending the funeral from a distance were; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wilkens, Mrs. Margaret Obermeier and Carl Wilkens of Chicago; Mrs. Katherine Dorfmeyer, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dorfmeyer, Herman and John Dorfmeyer, Mr. and Mrs. Art Meyer, Mrs. Marie Meyer, Mrs. Sophia Meyer, Chris Meyer and Emil Mueller and daughter, all of Hooper; Mr.and Mrs. George Kottman and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kottman, of Scribner; Dale Bush, Tom Snipes, Tom Waldo, Bill Ralston, Roland Nickols, Erving Peterson, Irving Walker and Louis Schick, of Lincoln; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Waker of Laurel, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rugge of Coleridge and Guy Hawkins of Sioux City. Following services at the home in West Point, the funeral was held from St. John's Lutheran church south of Pender, Rev. Robt. Kruse officiating.
