Henry Bongers, of Brainard, in Fatal Accident Thursday, Sept. 5 Henry Bongers, resident in Brainard vicinity for many years, died in a hospital in Omaha at 1 o'clock Friday afternoon, Sept. 6, as result of injuries sustained in an accident on Thursday morning, Sept. 5. Mr. Bongers' son has a well-digging rig, and Mr. Bongers left the home at the southeast corner of Brainard about 8 o'clock Thursday morning, driving a team hooked to a derrick. About 11 a. m. an insurance man from Columbus found Mr. Bongers lying in the road a few miles from Brainard. He was then conscious, but had been unconscious and it is thought had lain there about two hours. He had apparently dropped one of the lines and in reaching for it lost his balance and fell under the derrick, which ran over him, crushing both legs, giving him a severe head wound and causing internal injuries. The team went on down the road and turned into the first farmyard, stopping at a haystack. Help was summoned at once and Mr. Bongers was taken to the hospital in Omaha, where he passed away the next day. Funeral services were held in Holy Trinity church, Brainard, at 10 a. m. Monday, conducted by Rt. Rev. Msgr. Klein, and burial was at David City. In attendance at the funeral from elsewhere were Adolph Hermanns and family from Waitsburg, Wash., Ben Bongers and brother-in-law, Winfred Fowler, of Hot Springs, Ark., Mr. and Mrs. William Schmitz, Bernard Schmitz, Sr., and Anton Slama from Omaha and Mr. and Mrs. Martin Speicher from Columbus. Mr. Bongers was born in Helden, Holand, in June 1871. In the spring of 1881 he came with his parents to America and Nebraska, they locating on a farm two miles northwest of Brainard, and he had lived in Brainard community ever since. He was married October 6, 1896, to Julia Slama, who survives him, with their nine children, namely, Louis of Brainard, Ben of Hot Springs, Ark., Mrs. William Schmitz of Omaha and Paul, Henry, Irene, Rose, Julia and Theodore at home. He is also survived by two grandchildren and by two brothers, Albert Bongers of David City and Jacob Bongers of Brainard, and a half-sister living in Holland.
