On Tuesday, February 18, 1913, the remains of Henry Poorman, his wife Catharine (Weyant) Poorman and their daughter, Ann Poorman were disinterred from the Old Poorman plantation near Mount Zion M.E.Church in Washington County, Maryland. Henry Poorman was born in 1769 and died in 1838. Catharine (Weyant) Poorman was born in 1778 and died in 1835. Ann Poorman was born in 1819 and died in 1824. The remains which were found buried at a dept of five feet, were carefully placed in coffins and conveyed, with the tombstones, to Mt. Bethel Cemetery, near Foxville, Middletown Valley, where they were re-interred. The work being done by M. L. Creager & Son of Thurmont, assisted by Vernon M. Buhrman, great-grandson; Raymond Buhrman, great-great-grandson of Henry Poorman; and Earl Pryor, all of Foxville. Henry Poorman donated the ground for the church at Mt. Bethel, on December 17, 1832, and deeded it to the trustees on May 7, 1836, the first trustees being his son, Henry Buhrman, (who used the English pronunciation for Poorman, which is Buhrman; Leven Hayes, father of John O. Hayes, the veteran school teacher and Jeremiah Forrest, Sr. Mr. Henry Poorman owned slaves at that time and kept a general store and tavern from 1798 to 1830 in connection with a large saw mill, also a spinning and weaving plant on the farm now owned by Samuel B. Boreman at Mt. Zion. He also owned what is now the Lawson Poole farm, the John M. Brown farm and other farms near where he lived in addition to 442 acres of land in Frederick County near Mt. Bethel Church. The descendents of Henry Poorman, who take pride in the fact that he was so deeply interested in the welfare of the community, are justified to know that he and his immediate family are now resting in the ground he so generously donated to both church and cemetery.
