Henry C. Rutter's death as described by fellow soldier in First Michigan Cavalry: (as written) New Market Va. Apr 23d 1862. Henry Rutter died yesterday morning at 9 o'clock. He was in the hospital at WoodStock, and had been 5 or 6 days; he died of Typhoid fever, was buried at 9 o'clock this morning. I saw Benjamin this afternoon he had just returned from WoodStock; after seeing his brother buried; he looked quite downcast; he was not with Henry when he died Ben, did not get there in 5 or 6 hours after he, Started as Soon as he got a pass, after he heared Henry was dangerous; it will be Sorrowful news for his parents; but, I hope they will bear up under the affliction; Darwin Olney Woodstock, Va. May 12th 1862. I visited Henry Rutters grave yesterday, he is buried in the burying ground near the court house. There is good boards put to the head & foot of the grave, a good mound all Soded over & on the head board is this inscription in black letters H.C. Rutter, Co M. 1st Mich Cavalry. as I Stood by the head of the grave, I thought of his Father & mother & I thought I could See Rebecca & & Ann in front of Fathers house, weaping as they heard the news of his death, and As I Stood there the tears came to my Eyes in Spite of me; & I turned away feeling that all flesh is as grass, and that perhaps Soon, in an unexpected hour, I too would be called away from the busy Scenes that now Soround me.
