(Hill) Nichols was born Dec. 10, 1841 in Geneva, Ashatabula, OH. His mother was the dau. of Silas & Maria E. Hill. Henry Nichols is remembered fondly by his grandsons, Lee & Robert Nichols and granddaughter, Velma Nichols Keener. Robert was only 11 yrs. old when his grandfather died, so he has fewer memories on which to draw than does his brother & cousin. It is common family knowledge that Grandpa Henry liked to dance and play cards, both of which Grandma Myra highly disapproved. He also chewed tobacco which was also on Grandma Myra's "unacceptable" list. Grandpa Henry worked hard as a farmer all his life. Money was never plentiful but he supplemented his family's income by delivering milk and driving school bus, both horse-drawn vehicles. Henry needed to get up at 4:00 A.M. to milk the cows, transfer the milk to large metal cans for delivery, deliver it and return home in time to drive the bus. Velma has memories of riding with Grandpa Henry on his route. Henry married Myra Rebecca Adams, 3rd child & dau. of "Milo" William M. & Marilla (Haggerty) Adams, on May 9, 1894 in Geneva, OH by Rev. I B. Goodrich. They lived on a small farm in West Geneva in front of, and abutting the property of the winter quarters of the Walter Main Circus. Henry was a handsome, lean man (his portrait hangs on an upstairs bedroom wall of Harriet Nichols' home (1998). He is remembered as a bit of a flirt, a trait inherited and exhibited by some of his later born male descendants. Unfortunately, it is also well-known within the family that he and his wife, Myra, didn't have the most amiable relationship. In fact, according to grandsons Bob & Lee, they bickered regularly. Both remember long drives nearly every Sunday from Painesville to Geneva just to be sent outdoors while the adults visited and argued. Myra even had her own house built a little west of the main house on the Nichols property later on in life. In fact, even though both are buried at MT. Pleasant Cemetery in Geneva, OH, Grandpa Henry was by himself along the main drive (later disinterred and reinterred on the Nichols plot where his parents are buried. Myra is buried in the Adams plot on a hill in the center of the cemetery. Grandson, Bob Nichols, remarked on a recent trip to the cemetery in 1995 that at least they wouldn't be next to each other for eternity; peace at last for Henry. There is a family rumor that Grandma Laura, Henry's mother, allowed an acquaintance to be buried in the family plot which might account for the fact that there wasn't space for Henry when his time came to be buried there with the rest of the family. Bob Nichols remembers that the express purpose for many of those long Sunday drives to Geneva was to take a little money (and chewing tobacco for Grandpa) to his grandparents due to their dire economic situation. In their later, dependent years, Myra was cared for by her son, Archie & daughter-in-law, Hattie until she died. When Henry's health failed, after hitting his head in the barn while trying to hang a tarp in a doorway as a wind block, he spent his declining days in Kingsville County Home. He died there two years later. OBIT: EX-RESIDENT OF MADISON DIES- GENEVA, JUNE 3 ****************************************** "A former Geneva resident, Henry C. Nichols, 73-year-old- retired farmer, succumbed to a heart attack at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday at Kingsville. Mr. Nichols, who was born September 20, 1869, had been a resident of Kingsville two years. He was a member of the Geneva Park St. Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Myra R. Nichols, two sons, Glenn W. of Geneva and Archie M. of Painesville; a sister, Mrs. Bernice Clark of Geneva; a brother, Jay O., of Geneva, four grandchildren, one great-grandchild. Final rites were to be held at 2:00 p.m. today at the Landon Funeral Home, with the Rev. C.E. Rostofer officiating. Burial was to be made in MT. Pleasant Cemetery."
