August 1, 1917 - Keowee Courier In the death of Henry C Harbin, of Seneca, who passed away recently, Oconee has lost one of her best citizens. Mr. Harbin was not a man of great means, but he was a man of great possessions in such matters as strength of character, human kindness, charity of thought and conscientious action. There are few men for whom we held higher respect for real worth as a man. He was the soul of honor and his life was a wellspring of those better qualities which too few of us possess. He was a staunch friend of The Courier - one we always honored, and one we will long miss. August 1, 1917 - Keowee Courier H. C. Harbin Passes Away One of Oconee's Spendid Citizens Called To His Reward (Farm And Factory, July, 26) Henry C Harbin died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. Z, Whitmire, in Seneca, Saturday morning at 5 o'clock. Mr. Harbin had been confined to his bed for about two weeks and suffered from an internal cancer. Some time ago his physicians announced that his case was very serious and that it was doubtful that he would survive. Mr. Harbin was able to be about town up until a short time ago and retained his cheerful disposition until the end. Mr. Harbin was 74 years old and resided here the greater part of his life. He was the first policeman employed in the town and served as a peace officer, either county or municipal, for years. "Uncle Henry" a name given through the well-merited affections of the people, joined the Baptist church at Shiloh and was for several terms the clerk of the church. He was ever honest, upright and truthful, faithful to every trust, and though he never amassed a considerable portion of this world's earthly goods, he had that which is greater - the respect and confidence of his fellow man in every walk of life. He was a member of Seneca Masonic Lodge. Mr. Harbin is survived by two brothers and six children - Mrs. W. Z. Whitmire, of Seneca, and Mrs. Dodd, of Chattanooga. Y. W. Harbin of Chattanooga, and Mitt and Jim Harbin. Funeral services were at Shiloh Baptist church, Monday and internment was in the grounds adjoining the church.
