He was born Sept. 3, 1848, on a farm six miles east of Marion, and was the third son of John S., and Jane Oxley, to whom were born six sons, and three daughters. On January 1, 1874, he was united in marriage to Miss Alice Ives, who, with the three children, Mabel, and Carl of Marion, and Mrs. C.A. Gray, of Cedar Rapids, survive him, also two grandchildren, the little daughter and son of Mr. and Mrs. Gray. Mr. Oxley had spent his entire life in this vicinity, holding places of trust in various organizations. One of the older members of the Baptist church, he was faithful and regular in attendance, and in it's support. He was a deacon for some years, which office he adored with loyalty to the cause, and credit to the office. Today a good man is gone from the community and the family mourn the passing of a true husband and loving father. The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at four o'clock from the residence 1347 Twelfth street and were conducted by his pastor, the Rev. Gorge [sic] Wright Gelvin. Among the many friends, who came to pay their last respects was an old boyhood chum of Mr. Oxley's, Eugene {can't read}, who came from his home in Denison. Burial was in Oak Shade cemetery.
