Read More	Osceola newspaper, March 17, 1897 GOLDEN WEDDING Two of the first settlers of Clarke County and of the first settlers of Fremont township, celebrated their 50th anniversary of their wedding Sunday March 7,1897. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Saddoris came to Iowa in the spring of 1853 from Champaign County, Illinois. They located on land they now own six miles north of Osceola. At the time Mr. Saddoris came to Iowa land was purchased from the government at the price of $1.25 per acre, and their nearest neighbor was the late Mr. Wm. Farley, who resided on his old place two miles north of Osceola. When the prairie began to be settled up Mr. Saddoris rented one room of his house for a schoolroom where school was taught for about ten years. The same room was used for a church and several protracted meetings were held in his house, some lasting several weeks, Mr. and Mrs. Saddoris taking an active part, as they have lived Christian lives from their childhood. Mr. Saddoris was born in Richland County, Ohio, May 15, 1818. Miss Margaret Kirby was born in Champaign County, Illinois, March 1, 1829. They were united in the holy bonds of matrimony March 7, 1847 by Mr. Derrick Esq. in Green County, Wisconsin, where they resided about six months. They then moved to Champaign County, Illinois where they remained until the spring of 1853, when they removed to Clarke County. While in Illinois their union was blessed with four children, Three of which are now alive, and eight more were born in Iowa, seven of whom are living. Their oldest child, Mary Adaline, born January 3, 1848, has eight children and four grandchildren, two of her daughters being married. These are the old couple's only great grand children. Mr. Saddoris' family all reside in Iowa except two; Lincoln, their second boy, lives in Urbana, Illinois, and Fred, their youngest boy, in Montesano, Washington. He is engaged in the lumber business on Puget Sound. Out of forty grand children, only three are married. Pearlie Saddoris was married March 5th, just two days before the wedding anniversary of the grandparents. Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather the house was thronged with about one hundred of their neighbors, relatives and friends, all of whom had baskets filled with the best. Rev. Robinson of Osceola was the minister in charge of the occasion and spokesman of the day. In a short speech he carried his hearers back fifty years ago to Wisconsin where Esq. Derrick married a young smooth faced boy and a beautiful young girl, tying the knot so firmly that it had lasted fifty years. Then Rev. Robinson expressed his desire that he might make it last another fifty years. He then presented the bride with a $20 gold piece given by the friends and neighbors. There were several other presents, some of them very nice and costly, then the dinner was served. The table was set for thirty-one and was thrice filled. There were several people who came in after dinner, making about one hundred guests. Rev. Smith, of the Murray circuit, arrived just in time to eat with the last table and to see the remains of the twenty-one cakes and innumerable pies; meats and fruits. The day was closed by most of the guests going to the Fremont church where Rev. Smith preaches. All present reported a good time. Some of the guests from a distance were: Osceola: Mr. and Mrs. Dave Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Riley Goodrich, Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton, W.W. Williams, J. Goldsmith and Mrs. Sam Saddoris. Henry Clay Saddoris Sr. Obituary - -Osceola Sentinel-Tribune, Osceola, Iowa Henry Saddoris, a pioneer of Clarke County, died at his home north of Osceola Sunday, aged eighty-four years and eleven months. He had been sick some time. The funeral services were held at his late home Monday. Mr. Saddoris moved to this county in 1853, and lived here every since, having spent a half century in this county. He leaves an aged wife and ten children; six sons , John, of near Osceola; Lincoln, of Illinois; Enoch and Sam, of this city; Fred, of Washington; Hank, of Lacelle; four daughters- Mrs. Jack Clevenger, Mrs. Estella Goodwin and Mrs. John Neeley, of Warren County,, and Mrs. Beatty, of near Osceola. Mr. Saddoris was a member of the M.P. Church. He was a good citizen, and in his long life here had made many fast friends, by his hearty, pleasant manner.
