As an illustration of a child's determination and bravery in time of emergency and danger we relate the following true story: It was thirty-nine years ago this winter that an event transpired, which, though known to the oldest residents of this community, will bear repeating even at this late date. It was Christmas eve, 1866, the evening of the day in which John Bates, the murderer of old Abel Polly, was sentenced to be hanged, in the old stone court house of this city. Upon this Christmas eve of the year above mentioned, the Baptist people were holding a fair in the court house, which was one of the events of the season in the community, and was therefore attended by nearly everyone in the town and immediate vicinity. Among those who attended the fair that night were Mr. and Mrs. [Elizabeth Piper] Henry C. Sheldon, unaccompanied by their little daughters, Viola and Eva. With a parent's solicitude, Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon had left the fires well attended to, the evening was warm, and the lamps already lighted with instructions not to be handled. They also provided agreeable company for the little girls, their cousin, FRANK PIPER, and a neighbor, Olin George, brother of J. E. George. Frank, Olin and Viola were each eight years old, while little Eva was but five. In the early evening while at play, the children were startled to see a piece of burning wood fall from the chimney, and upon investigation found the house to be on fire. Their childish efforts to extinguish the blaze were futile, and they set about the task of carrying out such pieces of furniture as they could handle. The building stood upon the site of the M. E. Wilcox home. It was built of native lumber and, therefore, burned very slowly. While busy carrying things out of the house, Viola noticed Eva going out of the front gate, and felt a sense of satisfaction that little sister was in no danger of being burned up. Now comes a stranger part of the story, and one hardly to be believed. About nine o'clock, old Mr. Pollard, a miller here then, found a little slip of a child on the street. "Who's little one are you?" he asked. "I'm mamma's little girl. She is some where in town and I want to find her." Mr. Pollard thought of the gathering at the court house and took her there. Everyone was startled at the appearance of the child, without a wrap, with an everyday apron on and wearing a little hood. Eva had walked every step of the distance, two and a quarter miles, at that time of night, alone, and her appearance in the room was the first intimation of anything wrong at home. To the anxious inquiries other parents she calmly replied, "Why, mamma, our house is burning up." As the frantic parents asked, "Where are Viola and the boys, are they in the fire?" Her answer was ambiguous as she replied, "Well, I don't think they are I thought I heard them talking." The alarm was general by that time, and everyone ran to their wagons, there were no buggies, and started for the Sheldon home. The rest of the children were found safe, and because of the material with which the house was built, the fire had progressed slowly and the townspeople arrived in time to save more of the household effects.
