Elliott, of Chicago, a former well known Marion resident. Verification of the death, the bodies of Mr. Elliott and his companion having been found, has been received in Marion by his aunts, Mrs. Johnston Elliott and Mrs. R. Lee Taylor and cousins, Mrs. T. J. Davis and D. M. Parkhurst. The body of Mr. Elliott is enroute home for interment. Marion relatives have also received word that Miss Lizzie Elliott, an aunt of the deceased, who has been in Europe for several months, has cabled that she hopes to be home in time for the funeral. The following particulars of Mr. Elliott's death was published in last Friday's Chicago Record Herald: "As romantic and tragic a tale as was ever penned out of the great North was told yesterday when the particulars of the death of Harry Curtis Elliott, president of the Hubbard-Elliott Copper Mines Developing Company of Alaska, were learned from his brother, Albert J. Elliott, 446 Oakwood boulevard. The latter's information comes in telegraphed form from the Copper River country in Alaska and tells of the fatal snowslide that buried his brother. "Smacking of the blizzard; the frozen river and the rush for "pay dirt" is the story of the Elliott death. With him perished H.I. Grier, a Seattle mining expert, bent in the same race for riches. The tread of the story is picked up in a mining land tangle. Thomas F. Cole, mine owner, has an option on a 2,700 acre copper field in southeastern Alaska. "Harry Elliott was eating Thanksgiving dinner in New York when information that the option would expire on Feb. came to him, and after a hasty consultation with others of the company he left the comfort of his home to struggle with the hardships of the northland to investigate the worth of the property with the purchase in prospect. HE wired to Seattle for guides and experts and started. He had until Feb. 1 to return with his reports to Chicago. "From Tekil, Alaska, on Dec. 24, he sent a Christmas message to his wife announcing the start of the expedition. With him were A.H. Berry, a mining expert of Valparaiso, Ind.; Thomas F. Cole, owner of the rich land, and E.J. Collins, a nephew of Cole. There were also three mining engineers and a band of guides and packers. "Over frozen river and ice field by sledge and scramble the band battled its way to the Cole option lands in five days. This left little more than a month for Elliott to conduct his investigation and return to Chicago in time for the directors' meeting. On Dec. 30 he insisted on going ahead with the prospecting. An attempt was made to dissuade him on account of a heavy storm, but with the one thought of the swiftly flying time he set out. With him went Grier. That evening occurred a great slide. Tons and tons of snow rumbled and crashed, carrying tree and rock down the mountain side. "At the Elizabeth shaft Elliott and Grier had made their camp. Over the Elizabeth swept the juggernaut of snow. The rumble of the slide reached the main camp and a rescue party set out at once. No trace of the two was found. A runner was dispatched to the nearest town, more than a hundred miles away, and a dozen woodsmen responded. "These men are scouring the great copper field in a last hope of finding the two men, but although the relatives hope, the men of the north shake their storm graved heads and declare that the life of Elliott is lost in the race for riches. "Elliott had been away from Chicago three years. On his visits here he had lived with his brother, who is secretary of the company. His wife lives at 253 West Eighty-third street, New York." The Marion Register Tuesday August 12, 1919 H.P. AND HARRY ELLIOTT. ------------------------------------ H.P. Elliott, who died at his home in Chicago in 1917 and his son, Harry Elliott, who lost his life in an Alaska snow slide in 1913, and whose bodies have been resting in burial vaults since their deaths, were brought to Marion Sunday and buried in Oak Shade cemetery. Henry P. Elliott was a former Marion banker, but for many years before his passing was Freight Claim Agent of the Milwaukee, the first official of the kind in the United States, and concededly[sic] the best. Harry went to Alaska and became part owner of a copper mine, which experts say is one of the richest in the world, and when a railroad reaches it will make its owners millionaires. The pall bearers were C.H. Marshall, T.J. Davis, Daniel Parkhurst, I.M. Preston, R. Lee Taylor and Arthur De Garmo. Albert Elliott, a son and brother, and Miss Louise, a daughter and sister, of Chicago, were present. Also Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Preston, their son, daughter and granddaughter of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. P. being a sister-in-law and aunt of the deceased. Mrs. Elliott and MIss Lizzie, a sister of H.P.E., also of Chicago, were unable to attend, but a goodly number of Marion and Cedar Rapids relatives and old time friends were present. The burial lot is on a high knoll at the almost extreme southwest corner of the cemetery commanding a beautiful view of Indian creek and the surrounding country, a reservation made by Mr. Henry P. Elliott when he disposed of a tract in his life time for cemetery purposes. The last sad rites at the graves were simple but impressive--with a prayer by Rev. Barth of the Marion Christian church. D.W. Pingrey & Co. had charge of the services.
