Description	:	Henry Engel Mork was born April 5, 1900 in Marion Township, Clayton County, Iowa to Knudt Mork and Betsy Olson Mork. He was born on the first Mork farm, "The Old Place". This farm, located in Sections 16 and 21 of Marion Township and was developed by his grandparents Engebret Halverson (Rangdi Hytteplassen) Mork in about 1854 shortly after immigrating from Norway. It was located along the Elgin-Gunder road about a quarter mile southwest of the Center School. County school records for the Center School (Marion # 5, located about a mile northeast of the second Mork farm) show Henry's first school enrollment was in the winter term beginning on November 27, 1905. His teacher was Jennie E. Anderson (Mrs. John Anderson). Some of Henry's other teachers at the Center School were Nellie Nelson Wold, Verna Sherman, and Helen Nelson. Beginning in the fall of 1912, Henry was enrolled at the Sunny Dale School (Marion District # 4), located about a mile and a half west of his home. His teacher, Jennie Anderson, also moved to Sunny Dale in 1912. Henry graduated from Sunny Dale in the spring of 1916 and enrolled in the Elgin High School where he graduated in 1920. While in high school he was a member of the varsity basketball team. Following high school graduation Henry, along with a friend, Orvie Swenson, enrolled at the University of Iowa as a pre-med student. He soon left college to return to Elgin where he worked at the C. S. Halstanson dry-goods store for a time. On May 4, 1929 Henry was united in marriage to Rosella Larson, daughter of Henry and Ida Larson at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Galena, Illinois. For more about 20 years Henry and Rosella owned and operated a farm four miles east of Elgin where their five children, Avis, Dorlan, Randeen, Kaaren and Lea Rae, were born. In addition to raising corn, oats, cattle and hogs, Henry hauled cream from area farms to the Elgin Creamery; operated two threshing rings; and, served as Marion Township assessor. The family was active in the Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder. In 1946 the family purchased and moved to an attractive and productive 160 acre farm in Section 11, Springfield Township, Winneshiek County, near Decorah. Here the family was active in the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, soil conservation, 4-H club activities, softball and baseball leagues, Decorah High School, and Luther College. In 1972 Henry and Rosella retired from farming, sold their farm to David and Martha Huinker, and moved to a home on Center Street in Elgin. In his retirement he pursued a hobby of wood carving making many wonderful walnut picture frames, toys, and Norwegian fjord horses as keepsakes for children, grand children and friends. Henry and Rosella were members of the Elgin Lutheran Church. Henry died at his home in Elgin on July 27,1981 at the age of 81 and is buried next his wife Rosella in the Elgin Cemetery.
