Read More	Henry Ehlers Passes Away The death of Henry Ehlers occurred last Tuesday afternoon, October 11, 1904, after a long illness, of cancer of the stomach. And in the passing away of this man, a rare gentleman of sturdy character, and honorable, has gone to his reward. Henry Ehlers was born in Holstein, Germany, September 2, 1826, being the youngest of five children. The father, John Ehlers, was a farmer and two of his sons followed that most honorable calling, the eldest son, Claus, however, remaining in his native land. Henry received his education in Germany and performed the military service due his sovereign, Emperor William, being three years and five months a soldier of the empire. After which he was employed as a farm hand for about two years, saving enough in that short time to take passage to America. Mr. Ehlers first landed at Quebec, Canada, but in April 1855, he came to Delaware County purchasing eighty acres of land in Section Twenty-five, Adams township which very soon thereafter was increased to a farm of 160 acres and which will probably always be known as the "Ehlers homestead." Successful as a farmer, Mr. Ehlers was also a natural born soldier. At the beginning of the civil war, he offered his life for his adopted country, serving to the end of the war as a member of Co. I Fourth Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He was with Sherman in that famous march to the sea and he took part in many active engagements and finally after participating in the grandest review the world ever witnessed, that of the army of the north at Washington in June 1865, this soldier received his honorable discharge. On the 1st of July, 1862, Mr. Ehlers was united in marriage with Miss Anna B. Mangold and for twenty-six years a most happy companionship was theirs. On October 10, 1888, Mrs. Ehlers departed this life, leaving to mourn besides the husband, two sons, William H. and John H. both residents of this county, and a daughter Caroline, now Mrs. Lena Hauessler of near Delhi, these children being now bereaved of their father also. Mr. Ehlers held township offices of importance and honor, and was county supervisor for a number of terms. The town of Ehler was named for this farmer citizen and for nearly fifty years he lived in Adams township, respected and beloved by all who knew him. The funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Ehlers Thursday forenoon last being conducted by W. A. Morse Post G. A. R. of Manchester assisted by John Kyle Post No. 457 of Coggon and Rev. M H. Smith of the Coggon M. E. church and interment was made in Pleasant Hill cemetery. Manchester Democrat, Manchester, Iowa, October 19, 1904.
