His early childhood was spent at Big Lake, Minnesota. The family later moved to Maine near Battle Lake, Minnesota, where some of his people still reside. At the age of 20, he went to Ada and Twin Valley, Minnesota where he worked and farmed for a few years. April 4, 1892 he married Bertha Eimstad of Twin Valley, and they started for North Dakota driving a flock of sheep ahead of them. They settled about nine miles southwest of where Jud is now located and lived in a tent until they could get a small shanty built. One day on returning from Edgeley, they found nothing but ashes where the shanty had been. Then they built a North Dakota sod shack. That's where Lula and Mabel were born. The Putnams, like other early settlers, had many hardships and privations to endure; water was scarce, fuel hard to get and at a premium. One had to gather native "chips", tie hay and straw in bundles to burn. There were fierce blizzards and terrible prairie fires to contend with. The hard winter of 1896 and 1897, followed by a freak snow storm in May, wiped out most of the sheep. His next move was farming, an occupation he followed the rest of his life. He was quite a horseman and always had lots of them. In the early days he had horse power to grind feed with and the man who threshed for him ran the separator with horse power. About 1905, Mr. Putnam purchased a separator and a steam engine and did a lot of threshing between his farm and Kulm. In 1907 he purchased his first engine plows and could plow eight furrows where he had plowed one. In 1906, his wife passed away, leaving him with five children: Lula (Mrs. Stanley Potts, Bigfork, Montana), Mabel (Mrs. H. B. Sallee, Seattle, Washington), Henry, who was killed in a combine accident August 1933 leaving a wife and family, Stanley, who passed away April 1923, and Carrie (Mrs. P. C. Larsen, Port Angeles, Washington.) When Lula reached school age, there was no school there so she was sent to Minnesota to live with an aunt and attend school. By 1903 the Hammerstrom School had been built and was ready for use. The school term was two months. By 1907, the school term had been increased to four months a year. The Putnam children did well to average two and a half or three months a year. The Putnam family moved to the village of Jud in November of 1909 so that the children would have a chance to attend school regularly. Mr. Putnam married Freeda Fragein August 14, 1911. Two children were born to them: Ralph of Jud and Florence (Mrs. Walter Goetz, of Fargo). Mr. Putnam carried on the livery stable business in Jud for several years. Later he purchased the old Gunthorpe building and opened a garage with his son, Henry. About 1922, the garage was traded in on another farm. On April 24, 1941, Mr. Putnam passed away at his home in Jud.
