The passing of Henry Warneke, age 72, calls another of the pioneers from our midst, not only a pioneer of Sioux county, but a life that had been spent in pioneering since coming to America from Germany. He was born near Hanover, Germany, May 1st, 1857, immigrating to American with his parents in 1872, and located on a farm near Platteville, Wisconsin, where they resided for eight years. The family being pioneers in nature, desired a newer country in which to settle, and sent their son, Henry, then 23 years of age, into Iowa on a scouting excursion in 1880 to find a location for them. The result was, their settling near Odebolt, Iowa, where he spent his young manhood. On July 12, 1881, he was united in marriage to Miss Johanna Kallmer at Odebolt, Iowa. For a number of years he was engaged in the grain business at Odebolt and Correctionville. In 1887, they came to Harrison, Nebraska. For five years he was engaged in the general merchandising business, occupying the building which is now occupied by Ferd Federle. His great interest in stock drew him to a ranch southwest of Harrison, where he spent the prime of his life, disposing of his ranch to M. E. Smith. [Note, June 2010: Paul E. Holton, grandson of Henry said in the 1990s that this is not correct as reported here, but the ranch went to Verna and Frank]. In the past ten years he had not been actually engaged in ranching, spending the winters in California, Texas, and the pasts two winters in Denver. The summers he spend on his ranch here and in Omaha. During many years of his residence in this community he made many staunch friends among the early settlers and all with whom he had business transactions, being of an unusually optimistic temperament, always smiling, made him a blessing to all with whom he came in contact. He was very trustworthy in all his dealings. His relations with his neighbors were always pleasant, a kind father, and a good moral man, whom everyone who knew him respected. He was a member of the Methodist Church of Harrison, also of the Masonic Lodge and of the Woodmen of the World. In the past two years his health had been failing and for the past two months, since their residence in Denver, he had been gradually failing, and was taken to the hospital where he passed away Sunday, January 12, at 5 o'clock. Funeral services were held here Wednesday, afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Methodist church, Rev. B. F. Hamilton delivering the funeral sermon, following which the Masonic fraternity of Harrison conducted funeral rites over their deceased brother. Members of the Masonic order acted as pall bearers. He leaves to mourn his loss three children, Mrs. Mildred Hanson of Harrison, Nebraska; Mrs. Edna Carlson of Omaha; Mrs. Mabel Holton of Minneapolis, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Chester, Paul and Elaine Holton and Verna and Edna Mae Hanson. One grandson, Wendell Hanson passed away two years ago. He leaves two brothers, Earnest Warneke of Denver, Colorado, and August Warneke of Kingsley, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Hannah Kimm, passed away about 20 years ago. Besides the immediate relatives, there are a host of friends who will feel a distinct loss at his passing. The family have the sympathy of their many friends in their loss.
