Clipping dated 5-12-1904. Henry Franklin "Frank" Gualt was born on a farm in Audubon county which he left at age 14 to pursue a career in merchantile business in the Exira area. After a few years, he went to Danbury and clerked in a store. 12 October 1882, he married Dora P. Smith of Danbury. Two children were born, a son who died in infancy and a daughter Silpha May who became a bookkeeper in her father's store. Dora died 28 August 1886. Frank returned to Ecsira and established a business there. On 02 December 1892, he married Lissie G. Cook. They became the parents of 4 children: Carrie, Helen, a son who died in infancy, and Franklin, who was a baby when his father died at age 43. Frank's own father, Richard died a few weeks preceding Frank. Frank's brothers are Augustus Gualt and Charley Gault. His sisters are Mr. E.D.Powell, Mrs. Charey Houston, Mrs. Millie Hash and Mrs. Albert Bintner. Frank Gualt was very well-known, well-liked, helpful and generous. He was a member of the Exira City Council. His was the largest funeral in Exira to that date, with over 1000 people attending, most standing outside in the rain. Funeral services were held from the Congregational church, under the auspices of the Masonic Lodge. A band played. Speakers were the Mayor, town council members, businessmen, a member of the K.P. Lodge, a member of the Maccabees, a member of the Masons, and a member of the Eastern Star. Rev. E.C. Whitaker of the Christian church said the prayer, and Rev. Holladay of the Methodist church read the scripture. An organized choir sang with piano accompaniment. He was buried in the Exira cemetery.
