Behrends was born in East Friesland, Germany on February 12, 1871 and departed this life at his home south of Sterling, Nebr., at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4, 1958. His age was 87 years, 6 months and 22 days. He was in good health until last November when the infirmities of old age brought about a gradual decline in his health. He was given excellent medical care to make his declining days as comfortable as possible. In 1881 Mr. Behrends came to the United States with his parents, first residing in Iowa, then in Nebraska. On July 24, 1895 he married Margaret Boatsman of Sterling, Nebr. They moved to a farm south of Sterling and later in 1912 located on a farm north of Crab Orchard which was their home until they died. Mr. and Mrs. Behrends celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary on July 22, 1945. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Behrends, and surviving are three daughters and two sons; Mrs. Dena Baer, Spokane, Wash., Mrs. Nettie Rappel, Syracuse, Nebr., Mrs. Marie Reed, Spokane, Wash., Herman and Menard Behrends, Crab Orchard, Nebr. Three sons preceded their parents in death; Ludwig, Oct. 3, 1900, and John, April 25, 1911, both at Sterling; George, Oct 4, 1918, in World War I. Mrs. Behrends died April 2, 1947. Surviving are three sisters and one brother: Mrs. Lena Smidt, Crab Orchard, Nebr., Mrs. Flora Buchler, Hettinger, No. Dak., Mrs. Bena Stindt, Sterling, Nebr., and Herman Behrends, Aberdeen, So. Dak. There are also six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, and other relatives. Mr. Behrends was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, was formerly a member of the Luther Memorial church and a member of the church council. He was a kind and devoted husband and father. Services were held Monday afternoon at 1:40 from the Zink Funeral Home and at 2:00 from St. Johns American Lutheran church with Rev. A. G. Langholz in charge. Mrs. Harvey Giesmann sang and Mrs. John Goldenstein was organist. Pallbearers were Fred Smidt, George Stindt, Edwin Behrends, George Behrens Jr., Herman Janssen and Mr. Rappel. Burial was in the church cemetery. The sympathy of friends is extended to the bereaved ones.
