Not having been blessed with the goods of this world, Henry Gees, by trade a cobbler, born May 28, 1848, in the village of Thule, Westphalia, decided to look for luck and success elsewhere than within the narrow confines of his native town. Emigration to America was on the increase, many of his acquaintances and relatives, among whom his brother, Anton (Tony), had preceded him thither, their reports were encouraging. With his wife, Kathrina, (nee Griese), born August 10, 1854, in Boke, Westphalia, to whom he had become married September 12, 1874, and two little girl children, Henry set sail for America, on the steamer, “Hansa,” landing in the month of May at Baltimore, MD. Wise, prudent in their foresight, our newcomers at once purchased tickets for the West and soon after became inhabitants of Raymond, IL, where they have lived ever since. Their history as active, respected residents of this town needs no further mention. A pretty cottage in our northern outskirts houses the happy and contented family of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gees. God blessed their union with the following offspring: Mary, born May 30, 1875 (Mrs. Theodore Stoevener) Anna, born December 2, 1876 (Mrs. Patrick Kelly) Tony, born May 28, 1879 John, born July 10, 1881 Herman, born September 21, 1883 Kate, born August 17, 1885 Josie, born January 11, 1889 Dorothea, born February 6, 1896 Mr. Henry Gees is at present a saloonist; he dispenses to the thirsty on E. Main Street. His brother, Anthony Gees, is buried at St. Raymond’s Cemetery.
