Description	:	Heinrich "Henry" Gosch was the son of Heinrich Gosch and Wiebke Koll. Henry married Elsabe "Ella" Greve. (Both husband and wife were born in Klein Wittensee, Kreis Rendsburg-Eckernförde, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.) They had the following known children: Alvina, Anna, Heinrich "Henry" Jr., Ellen, Jerry, Catherina Elsabe, and Mary. Arrival Date: 2 April 1858 Arrival Port: New York City, New York County, New York, United States The Gosch family was in "steerage" or third class like most immigrants traveled whether due to financial circumstances or other reasons. Their children listed with them on the voyage: Wiebcke (Alvina) - age 15 Anna - age 14 Heinrich (Henry) - age 11 Elsabe (Catherina) - age 3 Mary was born in June 1858, less than 3 months after their arrival. The family made their home from approximately 1858 through at least 1885 (see "Note") in Washington Township, Jackson County, Iowa. "The History of Jackson County Iowa", Published November 1879, gives a brief biography of Henry and his family. The biography stated he was a farmer in Section 6, of Washington Township, and gives his Post Office as Green Island, Iowa. [NOTE: Henry's wife, Ella, died in 1861. In 1862, Henry married Dora Dannenberg Mesenbrink. Dora died early in 1885. Henry apparently relocated to Boone County, Iowa, sometime after that since he died in Boone County in 1892.] The Henry Gosch family's residence in Washington Township near Green Island is notable as the Hermann and Anna (Rahn) Meier family's first home in the United States was Green Island in 1874. That Meier family also hailed from the Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, area. After living in Green Island for a year, the Meier family decided to move further west and established their new home on a farm near Bouton, Iowa, in Peoples Township, Boone County. The Meier family was just one of many, many German families that eventually came to live in the same area of Jackson County, Iowa, as the Gosch family. So it appears that Henry Gosch and his family were some of the earlier German immigrants that helped to establish one of the German settlement areas in Iowa. In turn, their location became an acclimation stepping stone for many Germany immigrants like the Meier family that chose to move further west or to other areas. *** Peoples Cemetery of Boone County, Iowa, bears many graves honoring the lives of Meier, Gosch, Hansen, Lass, Friedrichsen and so many other German immigrants and their descendants. Of course, there were many marriages that took place among the same families, as well. Henry and Ella Gosch's two youngest daughters, Catherina and Mary, were among those that married and lived in the Peoples Township area. That may be why Henry was in Boone County when he died in 1892. Catherina married Hans F. Friedrichsen, and Mary married Henry J. Meier, son of Hermann and Anna (Rahn) Meier. (Hans Friedrichsen was born in the same location of Germany as the Meier children. His obituary notes that from 1869 to 1874 he also lived in Jackson County.)
