He was a 20 year-old Farmer born and raised in Plympton, MA, when he enlisted on August 20, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 24, 1861 as a Private in Co. E. He was a 20 year-old Farmer born and raised in Plympton, MA, when he enlisted on August 20, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 24, 1861 as a Private in Co. E. Per regimental records he was 5 ft. 7-1/2 in. tall, with a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair. He was engaged in 1862 battles at Second Bull Run, Shepardstown, and Fredericksburg. He was one of 11 men from Company E who were commended for their courage at the Battle of Fredericksburg, fought on Dec. 13, 1862, by Lt. Col. Joseph Hayes, regimental commander. On Dec. 27, 1862 he was promoted to the rank of Corporal and subsequently promoted to the rank of Sergeant on Sept. 14, 1863. He was further engaged in 1863 battles at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Rappahannock Station. He re-enlisted for three years service at Beverly Ford, VA on January 1, 1864, was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant on that date, was given a $325.00 re-enlistment bonus, and was granted a furlough of thirty-five days from Feb. 22, 1864. He was further engaged in the Campaign against Richmond from May 1, 1864 until he was wounded in the left side at Bethesda Church, VA on June 1, 1864. He was absent in the hospital until he was mustered out of military service on Sept. 22, 1864, in pursuance with Special Orders No. 254 issued by Head Quarters, Army of the Potomac on Sept. 20, 1864.
