Read More	Source: The Victor Record 2/15/1923 HARRY WHITWORTH PASSES Pioneer Merchant Succumbs After Long Illness Harry Whitworth, pioneer merchant of Victor and one of its most influential citizens, died at the home of his son-in-law, Charles Ferguson, on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 2:45 p.m. Mr. Whitworth had been in failing health for some months and had been confined to his home all winter, but only in the last five days did he become bedfast. His children, Mrs. Charles Ferguson of Victor, Mrs. Louis Begeman of Cedar Falls, T. H. Whitworth of Victor, and his brother Edward Whitworth, of Puyallup, WA., and his nephew, Thomas, also of Puyallup, were present at the bedside when he passed away. The funeral is to be conducted Friday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m. from the Congregational church under Masonic auspices, Dr. Williams, a Congregational minister from Newton, delivering the address. Mr. Whitworth was a charter member of Sharon Lodge, No. 287, A.F.& A.M., and was also a member of the Royal Arch Masons of Marengo. Harry Whitworth was born Sept. 17, 1848, in Baltimore, MD., the youngest son of Henry and Martha Whitworth of Manchester, England. The family, consisting of the father, mother, two brothers and one sister, came to America only short while before Harry was born. He lived in Baltimore until he was 18 years of age, when he joined his brother in Lewiston, IL. He learned the weaver's trade, becoming an expert, working in the mills at Lewiston, Des Moines and Marengo. At the latter place, he started as a clerk in a general merchandise store, later going to Williamsburg for a time. He then went into business on his own account in Grinnell where he operated a store. On April 9, 1878, he was united in marriage to Miss Georgiana Watson of Huntsville, OH. He decided to locate in Victor, moving his store from Grinnell to this place. For 35 years he conducted a general store here, prospering with the growth and development of the community, and in his business dealings became known as a man of absolute integrity. At one time his brother, Thomas, was associated with him, later retiring and moving West. He conducted his store for a number of years in a frame building on the site of the present brick structure in which the Whitworth store is located. Ten years ago he tore away the old store, built the new building and then retired, being succeeded by his son, Thomas II Whitworth. Three children were born, all of whom survive their father. His wife preceded him in death on March 28, 1907, since which time Mr. Whitworth had made his home with his daughters, Mrs. L. Begeman, and for the last 7 years with Mrs. Charles Ferguson. Of his father's family only one brother, Edward, survives. Mr. Whitworth was man who counted his friends by the number of his acquaintances. He was a man of wide reading, an interesting conversationalist and well informed on many subjects. His cheerful disposition, his unfailing courtesy and his thoughtfulness of others won him friends and held them. During his last illness, while suffering the most intense pain, his every thought was to spare his loved ones an additional pang of sorrow. While not a member of any church, he affiliated with the Congregational church, and he was known as a man of deep religious feeling, spreading his gospel of cheer and right living, to which he steadfastly adhered.
