Born Jan. 5, 1927, he was the son of the late Pearl Mary Ritchie and Herbert Ingram Chilson. Henry attended Salisbury City Schools and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Read More	Henry Chilson Obituary Henry Herbert Chilson SALISBURY - Henry Herbert Chilson, 87, passed away Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center. Born Jan. 5, 1927, he was the son of the late Pearl Mary Ritchie and Herbert Ingram Chilson. Henry attended Salisbury City Schools and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He also worked for Carolina Rubber Hose from 1943-1994. Henry trained in infantry at Camp Gordon, Ga., and then was assigned to the 62nd Signal Batallion. He kept communications for the 24th and 25th divisions with Occupation troops in Japan for a year, where he achieved the rank of Army Technician 4. He was also awarded the Meritorious Unit Citation and the Expert Infantry Badge. He served in many cities across Japan including Nagasaki, Hiroshima, Tokyo, Yokohama and Kioto. Henry rode a troop train across the country to Washington, where he boarded a transport ship (converted tanker). The ship broke down, then was in a terrible storm that lasted 3-4 days which blew it 800 miles off course. Consequently, the ride over took 28 days, while the return trip took only 11 days. One assignment while serving in Japan was as a welder in motor pool with maintenance, where he mostly welded "L" for oil stoves/wood stoves in officers' barracks. He also drove a wrecker and did maintenance for the battalion trucks. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Virginia Simmerson Chilson; grandson Nathan Eric Raymer; sisters Virginia Chilson Martel and Mary Chilson Farthing. Those left to cherish his memory are son David Ronald Chilson (Carole) of Salisbury; daughters Franda Raymer (Frankie) of Salisbury, Melanie (Mel) Chilson of Salisbury; grandchildren David Wayne Chilson (Delinda), Susan Chilson Culp (Robert), Lisa Renee Raymer; great-grandchildren Whitney Chilson, Erica Chilson, Mattie Chilson, Kelsey Culp, Logan Chilson, Seth Culp, Craig Linthicum and Ryan Linthicum. Visitation: 2-3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 205 St. Paul's Church Road, Salisbury, NC 28146. Service: 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with the Rev. D.J. Lura officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites performed by the Lyerly Volunteer Honor Guard.
