Fenstermann was born June 17, 1870, near Elkader, and passed away at the home of his son Wesley, in Aurora on Jan. 26, having attained the age of 84. He was the oldest son of Bernard and Anna Wessel Fenstermann. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Edgewood on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 29 with the Rev. Laurence Marshburn, pastor of the church in charge. Burial was in the family lot in the Wood cemetery east of Edgewood. When Henry was 8 years old, his mother passed away and after that his father tried for two years to farm and keep the family together. When his father sold out Henry went to stay with his uncle Herman Wessel, for three or four years. The time came when he went back to help his father who had resumed farming. Henry Fenstermann was married to Emma Hildebrandt of Woodbine, Ill., on March 4, 1898. To this union were born six children--three sons and three daughters (one daughter preceding her parents in death). On Oct. 5, 1909 Mrs. Fenstermann passed away, leaving her husband with five small children the oldest being 10 years of age, and the youngest three months. Being of pioneer stock and strong courage, Henry Fenstermann continued to care for his motherless children, guiding them into adulthood with the help of his unmarried sister, Marea Fenstermann. Mr. Fenstermann was for a long time a respected member for the rural communities of Wood, Edgewood, Greeley and Oneida and during the past 17 years he has made his home with his eldest son in Aurora. Reflecting his parents' strong religious example, Henry was throughout life a faithful member of the Methodist church. He had an important part in the building of the present Wood Methodist church and of recent years he attended services at the Aurora Methodist church. He was one of the founders of the Ebenezer cemetery at Wood which is his final resting place. Many knew Mr. Fenstermann in the activities of business and public affairs. He wrote insurance for many years, was one of the original board members of the Edgewood creamery and he served as a township trustee in Elk township. He leaves to mourn his passing his five children, Wesley of Aurora, Howard of Edgewood, Estella (Mrs. Harold Johnson) of Garrison, Dorothy of Waterloo and Carl of Greeley; his sister, Miss Marea Fenstermann of Manchester; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death his wife, his parents, a daughter, a brother (Fred) and two grandchildren.
