From the SD historical soc., Turner Co. Tribune, September 3, 1931 Father and son buried at Rosehill Twenty-four hours after his son Harold had been laid to rest in Rosehill cemetery, Henry Rhode passed away following a lingering illness. His death Friday Morning was hastened by the shock of his son's dealt and the ordeal of his funeral. Mr. Rhode was unable to attend his son's funeral services Thursday morning and a trained nurse was in constant attendance at his bedside, but the sad burden was too much for his strength and the end came quietly five days following the death of his son. Henry Rhode Henry H. Rhode was born in Hanover, Germany, on January 9, 1859 and came to America with his parents at the age of twelve years. They settled in Illinois and remained there for five years, moving then to Cherokee County, Iowa. It was there that he met and married Charlotte Agnes Carnahan in 1884. To this union were born five children; four sons, Guy who passed away four years ago, Royal who resides at Atwater, Minn., Leon D. of Parker and Harold, who preceded his father in death only a few days, and one daughter, Charlotte of Parker. In 1885, with his family, Mr. Rhode moved to Bruele county, South Dakota and in 1897 they moved to Parker where they since have made the family home. Mrs. Rhode passed away less than a year ago, on November 8. Mr. Rhode is survived by two sons, Royal of Atwater, Minn., Leon of Parker and one daughter Charlotte, two half brothers, Fred Hoffmeier of Aurelia, and Will Hoffmeier of Ida Grove, Iowa, one half sister, Mrs. John Gueither of Aurelia, Iowa and eleven grandchildren. Mr. Rhode was a good neighbor and a kind friend and father. He united with the Parker Methodist church in 1907 and for many years has done the janitor work there. He was a carpenter by trade, but was compelled to retire from that work and for eighteen years he acted as sexton of Rosehill Cemetery, where he now rests. He held this position for a longer period than has any other caretaker. Funeral services were held from the Methodist church Saturday afternoon with Rev. Fred Ray as pastor in charge. A quartette composed of Mrs. Fred Wendt, Miss Harriet Schafer, Dr. Fuillmore and Lester Wray sang, Mrs. Wray accompanying. Pallbearers were: E.A. Wendt, George Roberts, Barney Kasten, A.W. Crawford, J.G. Nold and Frank Wirta. |
