[In same proceedings, Lizzie Armstrong was adopted by J. B. Erben] March 9, 1909 - Carroll Sentinel - H.H. Stratemeyer met with what proved a fatal injury last Wednesday morning while going down the stairs in the Gilley block. In some manner or other he lost his balance and fell head forward down the stairs striking the cement sidewalk with great force. His right arm was badly injured and his skull fractured. He was rendered unconscious by the fall and for a time it was thought he was dead. He was removed to the hospital and placed under a physician's care. After remaining in an unconscious condition the greater part of the time, he died Saturday morning. He was in great pain and suffered greatly to the end. The opiates given, but little effect in bringing relief. The accident was a most unfortunate one indeed. As he was well advanced in years and in poor health his condition was hopeless. Mr. Stratemeyer was a man of great physical endurance but for several months had been failing very rapidly. His condition was that of a man suffering from palsy and had in a measure lost control of his muscles and this, no doubt, was in a large measure responsible for the accident that resulted in his death. H H Stratemeyer was born in Germany, January, 1837 and came to this country in 1851 and located at York, Penn. He was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Billmer in July 1857. In 1861 he enlisted in Co K. 86th Penn. infantry. He remained in the service until the close of the war. After his return from the army he and his wife moved to Baltimore, Md. They afterward came to this state and located in Carroll in 1875. They have made their home here ever since. Mr. Stratemeyer was an expert tinner and worked at his trade for many years. For the past few years his health has been such that he was obliged to abandon work. The good wife who survives him has the sympathy of many friends in her affliction. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at the home, Rev. Evards conducted the services. The funeral arrangements were in charge of the Masonic order of this city of which he was a member as well as that of the Grand Army.
