Description	:	The subject of this sketch, who resided one mile north of Helt's Prairie in Helt township, has laid out his armor and gone to reap his reward in that better world. Read More	The subject of this sketch, who resided one mile north of Helt's Prairie in Helt township, has laid out his armor and gone to reap his reward in that better world. Nearly two years ago, the deceased was stricken with paralysis, and for over 16 months he was unable to walk, or even feed himself. He suffered intensely, but bore it all patiently. During his illness, he told his family that he did not have long to stay, that his end was near, but he had a hope in the resurrection. He was taken worse on the 16th of this month, and gradually sank until the 20th, when death stepped in with his cold, icy hand and claimed him for its own. The funeral services took place the next day and were very largely attended by his neighbors and friends. Rev. John F. McDaniel, of the M.E. Church, performed the last sad rites, after which his remains were followed by sorrowing friends to the Helt's Prarie cemetery and gently laid away in their final resting place. The deceased was born in Ogdensburg, NY, August 17, 1809, and at the time of his death was nearly 72 years of age. He came to Indiana in 1825, and settled in this county in 1838. He was a blacksmith and stonecutter by occupation, and was as honest and industrious a mechanic as ever handled a tool. For a number of years he was honored by our people with the responsible office of County Commissioner and filled that important position to the satisfaction of everyone. He was a man thoroughly posted in the scriptures, and a strict observer of the Golden Rule. He had but few faults, and in his death Vermillion County loses a good citizen. Peace to the old veteran's ashes. ****************** The 1860 Census states he was 50 and a blacksmith, his wife Celina was 43; and children Irena 21, Milton 17, Ransom 15, Hannah, 10, Louisa 6 and Henry 4.
