As a newspaper man he bought the Horry Herald in 1899. At that time this paper had less than 600 subscribers, while now its certified subscription list numbers 2,500. Mr. Woodward has acquired most of his education through his own efforts and while teaching and engaged in various self-supporting activities. He was born in Horry County, June 3, 1874, a son of William D. and Pauline Elizabeth Woodward. His father was a farmer and the Woodward ancestors settled in Virginia in colonial times. Mr. Woodward had only a common school education as a boy, worked on farms, began teaching at the age of eighteen, took up the study of law while engaged in school work, and during 1897-98 was a resident student of law in the state university. He was chosen as one of the four to deliver the orations at the graduating exercises. He began practice at Conway in July, 1898, and the following year became owner of the Horry Herald. In 1898 he was also elected a member of the Legislature and held that office two terms. He is affiliated with the Masonic Order, the Woodmen of the World, is a democrat and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. June 25, 1901, he married Miss Grace Dusenbury.
