Epley was born in 1813, in York County, Pennsylvania. On April 2, 1839, in Fairfield County, Ohio, he married Elizabeth Zimmer, daughter of Philip and Elizabeth Valentine Zimmer. They were the parents of one son: Charles Epley. Henry passed away June 11, 1887, in Canal Winchester, Franklin County, Ohio, and was buried in Union Grove Cemetery there. From the Ohio Historic Places Dictionary: "The Henry J. Epley House is one-and-a-half stories tall, two rooms deep, with a three-bay facade, and a steep gable end facing the street. This is one of twenty-seven of this house type in the incorporated limits, five of which are brick including this house. Significant architectural details include the intact exterior composition, fenestration, and details including the entry and slate roof. In tact interior details include the unaltered room configuration, wood floors, oak wood trim and baseboards of plain detail, and hardware. Henry J. and Elizabeth Epley owned several lots on the Coleman Addition prior to and during the Civil War. Epley acquired this lot in 1863 from Elisha B. Decker and it is believed he built this house soon thereafter. H. J. Epley died in 1887 and the property went to his son, Charles.
