He was named for his uncle, Henry James, the Northern Pacific brakeman who was badly injured in the same train accident that took his father's life. Read More	Henry James (Hank) Mongoven was born May 1, 1893, at St. Paul, Minnesota. He was named for his uncle, Henry James, the Northern Pacific brakeman who was badly injured in the same train accident that took his father's life. Hank quit high school after two years and worked for Zejdlik & Martin Grocery. Later he was a timekeeper for ice cutters of the Dunlevy Ice Company on the Red and the Red Lake rivers. Hank remained in East Grand Forks – probably with his uncle, Mike Traufler, who lived next door – when his mother took the rest of his siblings to Minneapolis in 1908. Fortunately, the railroad made coming home relatively easy and brothers John and Joe were able to visit him, according to the Evening Times of July 29, 1909. His mother and brothers returned to East Grand Forks later in 1909, and Hank was among the family when the 1910 census was taken in April. The United States entered World War I in 1917. On June 5, Hank registered at his local draft board. At the time, he was single and lived at 114 S. 3rd Street in East Grand Forks. The draft card described him as being tall, of medium build, and with brown eyes and dark hair. He worked as a brakeman for the Northern Pacific Railway Company, a job he had obtained around 1913. Hank was sent to the Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Illinois. On February 6, 1918, the Grand Forks Herald reported that Hank had returned to Illinois after visiting relatives and friends in East Grand Forks while on furlough. Hank never saw combat duty, as the war ended in November 1918. After his service, Hank returned to East Grand Forks where he lived for a time with the Burkhardt family and his widowed mother. He still worked as a railroad brakeman as of the 1920 census. Hank married Mary Alda Driscoll on August 24, 1921, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Alda, a daughter of James Driscoll and Annie Sullivan, was born January 5, 1896, on her parents' farm at Huntsville Township, several miles southeast of East Grand Forks. The Driscolls were Canadians of Irish descent. Alda was a schoolteacher at Melville School prior to her marriage. She and Hank had four children: James Stephen, William Joseph, John Henry, and Elizabeth Ann. During the early 1920s, Hank was a partner in Mongoven & McGowan Groceries and Meats, at 307 DeMers Avenue in East Grand Forks. Though the Mongovens spent most of their lives in East Grand Forks, they did live elsewhere. They were in Thief River Falls by 1927, where Hank worked at Farmers Meat Market and the family lived at 322 Knight Avenue. After a couple years, they returned to East Grand Forks. The Great Depression was underway when the 1930 census taker arrived. Alda and their three boys lived on her parents' Huntsville farm, yet Hank wasn't with them. Probably for financial reasons, he lived at East Grand Forks in the home of his brother-in-law and sister, Earle and Bessie Burkhardt. He was employed as a "timekeeper for the power company" in East Grand Forks. Shortly after the census was taken, the Mongovens moved to Fargo, North Dakota, where Hank was a department manager at the Piggly Wiggly store. This job didn't last long, and the family once again returned to East Grand Forks. Hank worked for S.R. Dunlap, a retail beverage dealer, and the family lived at 322 Sibley Avenue, according to the 1934 city directory. City directories for East Grand Forks list Hank and Alda at 114 South 3rd Street (1936) and at 125 Elm Drive (1938, 1940, 1942, 1945, and 1948). He worked as a grader operator from 1936 through 1940, according to those records, and then performed maintenance work for the County Highway Department through 1945. At the time of the 1940 census, the Mongovens lived at their Elm Drive home. Henry graded roads for the county, Alda kept the house, and James, William, John, and Betty Ann attended school. Work had been good in 1939, as Henry recalled working 40 weeks and taking home $6,200 – a nice sum in Depression-era Minnesota. Hank started his final line of work by 1947, when he was hired as a bookkeeper and office manager at Leo Dunlevy Gas & Fuel. During World War II, Hank's widowed mother stayed with the Mongovens on Elm Street. Around 1951, Hank and Alda moved to 1105 North 5th Street. It was no secret that Hank had high blood pressure for years, but it must have come as a sad shock when Alda found her husband dead in bed on the morning of August 2, 1956. Hank had suffered a heart attack and died quietly at age 63. He was buried in the family plot near his mother and father in Calvary Cemetery at Grand Forks, North Dakota. Alda outlived her husband by more than 40 years. She later moved to Grand Forks, where she died May 10, 1997, at the remarkable age of 101.
