Description	:	Henry is the son of Denys & Jovite (Dufaux) Patenaude/Putnam. Henry married Rose King on September 14, 1850 in Burlington, Vermont. Henry and Rose are the parents of seven children: 1. May 30th, Comrade Henry Putman struck his tent on the shores of time and crossed the mystic river of death, bivouaced on Fame’s eternal camping ground, there, there to meet loved ones and friends who have gone before. Henry Putnam was born at or near St. John Province of Quebec, Canada April 10, 1830. While yet a young man he came to the United States and settled in the state of Vermont, then was married to Miss Rose King, removing back to his Canadian home for a short time before coming west with his wife and settling in Winnebago County, Illinois. A year or two before the war he removed to Clayton county Iowa where death claimed four of their children in the short space of four weeks and which was really the cause of his beloved wife’s death which occurred in 1864. February 18th 1865, he enlisted in CO. E 9th Iowa Infantry and was sent with others to join his regiment at Savana, South Caroling going with General Sherman up through the Carolinas around to Washington D. C. and took part in that grand parade or review with the army of the Potomac and Cumberland. From here his army corps went to Louisville, Kentucky where he was discharged the 18th day of July 1865. Upon returning home, he met and married Miss Elizabeth Bulett and moved to Sioux county Iowa, where he opened a new farm and resided until the day of his death. He had seven children by his first wife, two of which survive him, Horace and Edward. Nine children blessed his second union, eight of whom mourn with their two brothers and mother the loss of a loving father and affectionate husband. His character was above reproach, honored and respected by all who knew him He died as he lived in the triumphs of redeeming grace. He was reared in the Catholic religion and was a true and earnest member of that church, and his remains were to rest in the Catholic cemetery in Hull. Rev. Father Phelan celerated mass before one of the largest congregations ever assembled in the church. The deceased’s last request that his comrades attend his funeral, was carried out by Cottrell Post to a letter. The floral offering of the Post in an emblem of his faith was the finest ever offered here, and as each May 30th comes, a cross and a crown with a flag will be found on his last resting place—an emblem of patriotism, faith and victory.
