He was born on Nov. 13, 1917, in Ping Ting, Shansi, China, the son of missionary parents, the Rev. Isaiah and Elizabeth (Waybright) Oberholtzer, serving with the Church of the Brethren. Read More	Henry Oberholtzer, 98, passed away at the Primrose Retirement Center in Anderson on Monday, Sept. 12, 2016, following a brief illness. He was born on Nov. 13, 1917, in Ping Ting, Shansi, China, the son of missionary parents, the Rev. Isaiah and Elizabeth (Waybright) Oberholtzer, serving with the Church of the Brethren. After schooling at home, he and his twin sisters attended the "North China American School." After graduating from high school in 1936, he left for America to attend college. He received his BA degree from Manchester University in 1940. He then continued post-graduate work at Ball State University to qualify to teach Industrial Arts in public school. He was able to finish his first year of teaching industrial arts at both the high school and junior high, before being called into military service. During World War II he enlisted in the Air Force and saw service with the Air Transport Command. After the war, he returned to Indiana and resumed teaching in the Alexandria Community School system, again as an industrial arts instructor. In 1952 he received his Master of Arts degree from Ball State University. In 1948 he married Maxine Allen who also taught and was head of the Business Education department. Maxine and Henry taught together for over 30 years, retiring together, in 1978. Nine years after their retirement, Maxine passed away. They had been married for almost 40 years. In 1989 Henry married Ruth Harney from Anderson. She had lost her husband and had recently retired. After moving to the Summitville area she and Henry joined the "Association of Widowed People." In 2009, they chose to move to the Primrose Retirement Community in Anderson. Henry was always an active member of the community. He was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church in Summitville. He belonged to the local Lions Club and served in all its offices. He also was a 50-year member of the Summitville Masonic Lodge. His favorite hobby was building and flying model airplanes. He helped organize and charter the local "Madison County Radio-Control Flyers" club. He had a well-equipped work shop from which came numerous furniture and craft items, his favorites being grandfather clocks. After he retired he was able to take Maxine and, later, Ruth on a number of memorable trips. Henry made three trips to China, one with Ruth. There were many occasions to visit family members across the United States. Henry is survived by his wife, Ruth (Harney) Oberholtzer; sister, Catherine Ruth (Eldon L.) Pippen; nieces, Louise Stanley, Susan Stanley, Sylvia Pippen, and Nancy Pippen; nephews, David (JoAnna) Pippen and Alfred (Fanny) Stanley; stepsons, Kenneth Harney and Mike (Ellen) Harney; stepgrandsons, Eddy (Jennifer) Harney and Jonathan (Leann) Harney; and eight grand nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marie (Oberholtzer) Stanley; and brother-in-law, William Lyons Stanley. Services honoring Henry's life and legacy will take place at 1 p.m. Friday at Owens Funeral Home, 412 N. Harrison St., Alexandria. The Rev. Steve Wigger will officiate. Interment will follow in the Vinson Memorial Cemetery in Summitville. Friends may call at the Owens Funeral Home from noon to 1 p.m. on Friday prior to the services. Published in Herald Bulletin
