May 13, 1937 issue of The Russell Record George Henry Bender - Obituary George Henry Bender, son of George Henry Bender, and his wife Elizabeth Denies, was born at Kratzke Russia, January 5, 1856. Soon after his birth the Christian parents took their little son to the sacrament of holy baptism that he might become a child of God. When old enough the boy attended school and after being duly instructed in the faith of his fathers he was confirmed in the year 1870. Toward the fall of 1876 the young man left the parental home to immigrate into America and arrived in the month of that year in Russell County, Kansas, where ever since he had his home. Two years later, November 24, 1878 he was married to Katie Lohmann. This union was blessed with 11 children of home two preceded the father into eternity, while the surviving nine mourn the departure of their beloved father. Nearly half a century his faithful spouse shared with him joy and sorrow then went to her reward March 8, 1927. Since then the deceased made his home with one or the other of his children. Father Bender enjoyed good health up to his seventies. Then symptoms of diabetes the deadly disease, were perceived. The condition of the patient changed ever since, going up at time and then turning into worse again. April the 12th the sufferer was taken to the hospital at Hays. Yet no medical care could keep back the life. It came to an end last Sunday, May 9, at 11 a.m. at the age of 81 years, four months and five days. He leaves to mourn his death nine children, viz: Mrs. Lydia Schneider, of MIlberger, Kansas; Mrs. Hannah Wagner, of WaKeeney, Mrs. Emma Gross, of WaKeeney; August Henry and John Bender of Russell, Mrs. Charlotte Stieben of WaKeeney; and Mrs. Bertha Eichmann of Brownell then 51 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; one brother, Phillip Bender, of Russell; one half brother, Adam Bender of Russell and one half-sister, Mrs. Amelia Daubert, of Dodge City. Funeral services were held from the Lutheran Immanuel's Church at Milberger and interment was in the Lutheran Cemetery, Rev. Germaehlich officiating.
