Dec 8, 1939 - Henry Hackfort, Sr., one of Carroll county's genuine pioneers, died at his home in Willey at 5 o'clock Thursday evening, after a lengthy illness. He had attained the age of eighty-six years. Mr. Hackfort had been in falling health for the past seven years, but bedfast for only the last three weeks. The body will be taken this afternoon from the Kirchner-Dietrich Funeral Home to the family home in Willey, where it will repose until the time of the funeral services. Solemn requiem high mass will be read at the rites which will be held at 9 o'clock Monday morning at St. Mary's Church in Willey. The Rev. H. J. Dries will be the celebrant of the mass, the Rev. Frank Greteman of Merrill, deacon, and the Rev. Leo Schumacher of Charter Oak, sub-deacon. Mr. Hackfort, who had been retired from farming for the last nineteen years, was born in Westphalia, Germany, Feb. 22, 1853, a son of B. H. and Adeline Hackfort, who spent their entire lives in that country. He was one of a family of seven children. Emigrating to the United States in 1873, he lived in Winneshiek County, Iowa, for six years where he was employed at farm labor. In 1880, three years after his marriage, he came to Carroll county and bought a farm in Pleasant Valley Township, which was the nucleus of his land holdings. He was married May 29, 1877 at Festina, Winneshiek County, Iowa, to Miss Mary Gehling, a native of Wisconsin. The ceremony was performed, by the Rev. Father Sauter. Mr. and Mrs. Hackfort made the trip from Festina by covered wagon to their farm on the unbroken prairies in Pleasant Valley Township, near Willey. Mr Hackfort was a trustee of the St Marys church from the time of its organization until only one year ago. Mr. Hackfort had also taken an active interest in town and school affairs. He had served as school director for several terms. At the time of his death he was a ouncilman having held this office since the town of Willey was incorporated in 1912. On May 27, 1937, Mr. and Mrs. Hackfort had the rare privilege of celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary. Surviving Mr. Hackfort are his wife, three sons and three daughters: Henry Hackfort, Jr., Carroll; Herman Hackfort, at home; Bernard Hackfort, Mrs. Anna Schmitz and Mrs. Mary Grossman, Willey, and Mrs. Frank Grossman (Elisabeth), Dedham. Another son, Joseph Hackfort, died at Camp Dodge in October 1918. Mr. Hackfort also leaves twenty grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
