Description	:	Henry was the oldest child of Robert Mallatt and Jemima Thomas, of their three known children; his siblings were William Lawson (named after his paternal grandfather) and Mary E. "Polly". Henry may have been born in Warren Co., Indiana, which is where his parents married, and where his father may have been a constable in 1835. He and Elizabeth Rush married in 1861 in Newton Co., Indiana, and were likely living there in 1868 (or in the adjacent Jasper Co.) when they decided to move 580+ miles west to Cedar Co., Nebraska with their three children: Ann (age 5-6), William (age 3-4), and James (age 1-2)... even a motorized trip in the 21st century is a daunting trip with children that young, so image how innovative Henry and Elizabeth were to keep them safe, entertained, and fed! Henry's was the only known family in Jasper or Newton county. to go west with the family of John Barker and his wife, Josephine Matson. John was possibly a cousin of Henry's wife Elizabeth -- they grew up together, judging by the 1850 and 1860 censuses in which she was living with John's parents, Thomas R. and Mary Jane Barker (he was a prominent citizen of Jasper and Newton counties; Mary may have been related to Elizabeth). It's not clear whose idea it was to move 500 miles away from home. Using oxen to pull their wagons, it took about 10 weeks for the Mallatts and Barkers to complete the long journey, catching up in Iowa to the William Sullivan family (wife Catherine and infant son James; William and his wife were born in Ireland; their son was born in Wisconsin). The three families arrived together in Cedar Co., near Wacapona, and they settled on lands near each other... this is where Henry's last two children were born: daughter Jenny (age 1 in 1870) and son Francis (age 8 in 1880). Was it a plan for the Sullivans to meet the Mallatts and Barkers, or did destiny put the three families together?? A plan wasn't mentioned in the 1919 "Cedar County News" article about Elizabeth selling the land she had owned for 50 years, but the trip itself was noted in that article. It was also mentioned in the 1930 article in the same newspaper about Josephine Rowell, widow of John Barker and William Rowell. Henry was very young (age 35-36) when his life ceased. He left behind Elizabeth and their five children, who were likely aided through trying times by nearby families, such as the Barkers and Sullivans. (Widow Josephine Barker married William Rowell in 1876, but her two sons by John still lived with her in 1880.) Henry and Elizabeth must've been deeply in love, because she never remarried, even though just 32 years old when she became a widow She died in 1922 (about age 80), and was buried with Henry. Imagine 47 years passing before you can be with the love of your life again!
