Symonds, son of Robert and Isabelle Rae Symonds was born February 21, 1880 in Cass county, Iowa and passed away at his home north of Corning, April 16, 1953 after an illness of six months. He was united in marriage to Ida Mae Walker February 21, 1906 in Cass County. Beside his wife, he is survived by five children, Robert H. of Creston, Donald R. of Corning, Walter E. of Council Bluffs, Dorothy Hegwood of Lenox, and Esther Hogan of Corning; Blanche Gregory, a cousin from Kansas City, who made her home with the Symonds family. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and two brothers, Fred of Charles City and Ernest of Cumberland. Preceding him in death were one daughter, Hazel M., who passed away in infancy and two sisters, Agnes Walker and Helen Symonds. Mr. and Mrs. Symonds moved from Cass County to Adams County soon after their marriage and have lived in the Corning vicinity since. Mr. Symonds became a member of the Victoria Methodist church early in life and at the time of his death was a member of the Corning Methodist church. He was a loving husband and father and a good neighbor who was always ready to help in time of need. Two lines from one of his favorite poems expressed his philosophy of life. "Let me live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man." Funeral services were April 19, 1953 from the Methodist church in Corning with Rev. Frank Jacobs officiating. Music was by John Riegel and Esther Roland with Mrs. Joe Cook, pianist. Burial was in the Victoria Center cemetery. Pall bearers were Dallas Russell, Lloyd Jones, Glen Van Houten, John Walford, Kirby Hoskinson, and Melville Olive. Adams County Free Press April 23, 1953 Our community was saddened last Friday when word came here that Mr. Harry Symonds had passed away. The neighbors and friends offer sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved ones. Funeral was held Sunday afternoon in the Methodist church in Corning and burial at Victoria cemetery in Cass county. Very many from our midst were in attendance. Mr. Symonds was such a good neighbor and friend to all. He was held in highest esteem.
