LeRoy was Ida Gray Williams' sister Frances A. Gray LeRoy, born 11 January 1846 in Caldwell County, Kentucky. She died the 14 December 1882 in Kentucky. She is buried in the Robert Gray Cemetery in Caldwell County, Kentucky. Henry's father was Mark D. LeRoy born 27 February 1836 in Kentucky; died 25 June 1910 in Eddville, Lyon, Kentucky. Mark is buried in the Liberty Cemetery in Eddyville, Lyon, Kentucky. Furman E. Williams' wife, Ida, moved to Alachua from Dulaney, Kentucky with her sister, Fannie's 5 year old son, Henry LeRoy, who was reared by his aunt. For much of his childhood, young Henry found living in Alachua as being an experience short on playmates, "as the town was new and not blessed with children - a unique experience for any community regardless of its size." Henry did attend the Hampton and later, the Alachua schools. In 1899, Furman and Ida Williams had married, and the couple began constructing their grand new home near the center of town. It took three years to build, first appearing on the tax rolls in 1902. Furman Smith, another nephew reared by Mr. Williams, Henry LeRoy, and the Williams family moved into their new Queen Anne Victorian home along with the Williams' family servant, Candacy Wilson, a fifty year old widow. Furman E. Williams suddenly passed away in 1905. Fortunately, good news soon returned to the Williams household as in June Henry LeRoy and Eliza Dell announced their marriage. The Gainesville Daily Sun reported: "the groom is one of Alachua's leading young men. He is a nephew of Mrs. F.E. Williams and a member of the firm of Williams Company. He is regarded very highly as a businessman and is destined to become quite prominent in business circles. The bride is one of Gainesville's most popular young ladies. She is a general social favorite and will be greatly missed among the young people…The Sun, with other friends, extends congratulations." In 1912 the young couple welcomed the arrival of their baby daughter, Blanche, who Mrs. Williams considered like a granddaughter. Though as a young man Henry worked in his Uncle Furman's mercantile business, after his uncle died. Henry became a stockholder, running the Williams Company with Jack Williams, Furman's brother. Along with general merchandise, Mr. LeRoy's business interests included farming and real estate properties. In 1921, he became active in his uncle's old bank the Bank of Alachua, taking on responsibilities as vice president. He served as mayor of Alachua for four terms, continuing on as city commissioner into the 1930s. Unfortunately, the bank ran into trouble during the Depression era. Mr. Enneis, whose family owned the local Ford dealership, remembers his father driving a Lincoln Touring Sedan on a trip to Barnett Bank in Jacksonville with Mr. LeRoy and Police Chief Clarence Brown to arrange for a cash infusion. In spite of all good efforts, the January 22, 1931 edition of The Gainesville Daily Sun reported, "Bank of Alachua Forced to Suspend Operation Business…closing its doors shortly before the end of the day's business yesterday. Officials of the bank said steady withdrawals caused the bank to close. There was no concerted run on the institution .. Alachua's other institution, The First National Bank, was not greatly affected by the closing of its sister establishment…Officers of the closed bank said last night it was probable that plans would be made within a few days to reopen the institution. Nothing definite has been planned, however.." On December 23, 1931, the Sun informed its readers, "Depositors at the Bank of Alachua will be paid a five percent dividend today, F.G. McIntosh, liquidator, announced yesterday. Payment will begin at 10 o'clock this morning at the bank. Mr. McIntosh said the five percent payment today would bring the total dividends, paid since the bank closed in January of this year, to 15 percent."Blanche never married, but she became involved in her father's insurance agency. After Mr. LeRoy passed away in 1969, Daurice Bohannon, a close friend of the family, moved in to help Blanche take care of her father's various business affairs. Daurice, who was also an insurance agent, had previously been married to C. B. Bohannon, a mayor of Gainesville and city commissioner during the 1950's. Blanche passed away in 1989, while Daurice lived in the house until she passed away in 1996. The home was left to Daurice's niece and husband, Joan and George Sterovich. They sold the house in 1998 to Southcare, a non-profit social services company. David Dobson, Southcare's president, plans to open a wholesome foods Meals on Wheels catering service for the elderly, as well as quality restaurant. Tentative opening date for Govinda's Wholesome Foods is Mother's Day, 2000. Since 2000 several businesses have used the home as Restaurant's etc.. In June 2007 the Ivy House opened a Restaurant in the home. As of today they are still serving wonderful food. However, recently they haven't been doing that well and now have it for sale as of June 2011.Obituary below: In the Gainesville Sun on the 5 April 1968 HENRY LeROY ALACHUA ---- Henry N. LeRoy, 86, a long-time resident and former mayor of Alachua, died Thursday in Alachua General Hospital following a short illness. A native of Dulaney, Ky., he moved here 81 years ago and was a farmer and insurance agent. Mr. LeRoy served as mayor of Alachua for four terms. He was a member of the Methodist church, Masons, Scottish Rite, and Shrine. Survivors include a daughter, Miss Blanche LeRoy of Alachua; a nephew, Robert L. Nuchols of Frankfort, Ky. Also in the Gainesville Sun 5 April 1968 LEROY, HENRY N. -- Funeral services for Mr. LeRoy, age 86, former insurance agent, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, 1968, at the First Methodist Church of Alachua with Reverend Robert Shelley conducting the services. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Gainesville under the direction of Williams-Thomas Funeral Home. Leroy, who lived at Alachua, Florida died Thursday evening at Alachua General Hospital.
