Mr. Barton had been suffering from a brain illness for almost two years but was befast but a week prior to his death. The deceased was born April 15, 1861, in Otcego county, New York. As a young man he became interested in the bakery business and after his marriage to Viola Dunaway in 1879, he engaged in that line of work in Emmetsburg, Clear Lake, and Pocahontas, Iowa. Fourteen years ago they moved to Spencer where they first located in a home on West Fifth Street. For the past two years he and his wife resided with their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Barton. Mrs. Barton passed away August 4, 1932, following an illness of more than a year. Since her death, Mr. Barton has been under the care of Rena Lien who also cared for Mrs. Barton during her illness. He is survived by seven children, Robert Barton of Spencer, Mrs. Lettie Smith of Waterloo, Grover Barton of Sioux Rapids, Tracy Barton, Montevideo, Minnesota, Mrs. Pearl Fisher of Milford, Mrs. Orpha Neilsen of Clarion, and Forrest Barton of St. Cloud, Minnesota, 30 grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Nora Peters of Forest City also survives. Funeral arrangements have not been completed pending the arrival of members of the family. ________________________ Spencer News Herald October 21, 1932 Page 7 HENRY BARTON Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock at the Cobb-Phelps funeral home for Henry Barton, resident of Spencer, who passed away Wednesday, October 12 at the home of his son, Robert Barton, 249 South Center street. Rev. W. F. Hurst, pastor of the Church of Christ, conducted the services and a quartet composed of Mrs. Lloyd Santee, Mrs. John Mingus, Mrs. Della Hagberg and Mrs. Roy Noll sang "Face to Face," "No Night There" and "Shall We Meet Beyond the River." Pall bearers were M. L. Tatro, Elmery Harris, Ed Taylor, Clarence Kabrick, Charles Resmeland and C. H. Drown. Interment was made in Riverside cemetery. Beside his seven children, he is survived by two sisters and a brother, Mrs. Sabra Gardner of Eagle Grove and Mrs. Flora Tyrrol of Woolstock and David Barton of Sioux City. All of the children were in attendance at the funeral. They are Robert Barton of Spencer, Mrs. Lettie Smith of Waterloo, Grover Barton of Sioux Rapids, Tracy Barton of Montevideo, Minnesota, Mrs. Pearl Flsher of Milford, Mrs. Orpha Neilsen of Clarion and Forrest Barton of St. Cloud, Minnesota. ___________________ Spencer News Herald - July 11, 1929 Happily wedded for half a century last Friday, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Barton, well known and esteemed residents of Spencer for the past eleven years, celebrated the joyous attainment of their golden anniversary when their children and their families planned a picnic in their honor Sunday at Terrace Park. Featuring the day, in addition to the many appropriate and fine greeting and congratulatory words received by Mr. and Mrs. Barton, was the splendid dinner served at twelve o'clock when the relatives and a few friends, numbering twenty-five assembled. The day was enjoyed by the couple from the time of their arrival throughout the serving of the dinner menu, the playing of games and in visiting in the afternoon, until the group returned to their homes in the late afternoon. "It was a happy day for us and one which we will long remember," Mrs. Barton stated quickly in reviewing the gala day, and added, "We hope we will have other happy anniversaries to celebrate together." Parents of seven children, Mr. and Mrs. Barton are proud of their quiet and yet useful lives, devoted to the rearing of their children and in securing a comfortable mode of living for themselves. Several of their children were able to be present for the picnic Sunday. Among them were their son and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Tracy C. Barton; their daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Neilsen of Montivideo, Minnesota; there son and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Grover Barton of Arnolds Park; their son, his wife and their grandson, Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Barton and Clyde of Spencer; their daughter and her husband and their grandson, Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Fisher and Lyle, of Algona. The other children of the worthy couple are Forrest Barton of Jackson, Minnesota, Mrs. C. N. Nielsen of Clarion, Iowa, and Mrs. F. E. Smith of Waterloo. Mr. and Mrs. Barton have a number of grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Donald Dean Casey, a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Barton, is the only great-grandchild living in Spencer. By a peculiar coincidence or turn of fate, the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Barton, like their father, have been or are actively engaged in the bakery business, two of the sons operating the Peerless Bakery here for several years. The daughters and their husbands, too, know the bakery business or have helped in the work at the various bake shops operating. A brief review of the early lives of Mr. and Mrs. Barton is likewise interesting. Mrs. Barton was Miss Viola Dunaway before her marriage of English ancestry, she was born July 28, 1858 in Lewis county, New York. She came to Iowa with her parents when about ten years of age and located in Winnebago county near Forest City. Mr. Barton was born in Otsego County, New York, April 15, 1861. He removed to Iowa with his parents when eight years of age, locating at Clear Lake, where he grew to young manhood. When the couple met and were later married, they learned of their birthplace, which had been only a short distance apart. Following their marriage the couple made their home in Forest City for a number of years and later moved to Kansas for several years. Most of their wedded life, however, has been spent in Iowa. Eleven years ago they moved to Spencer to make their home, retiring at that time from the bakery business. For the past nine years they have made their home at 362 West First Street. One of their chief pleasures is their home and Mr. and Mrs. Barton have every reason to feel proud of their neat, comfortable abode. The building is a two-story frame house, four rooms with pantry and porch downstairs and two large bedrooms on the second floor. Mrs. Barton does all the cleaning and caring for the rooms and everything is kept clean and orderly. From the kitchen window a small garden can be seen. "We enjoy our home, our garden and our children," stated the couple. "We enjoy our neighbors, too." Actively interested in the affairs of the town, Mr. and Mrs. Barton make almost daily trips down town in their Jewett car. Both are enjoying fairly god health. She is one of a family of twelve. The oldest sister now living in New York, is 92 years of age while the youngest, 64 years of age lives in Forest City. Mr. and Mrs. Barton are known and respected for their unfaltering allegiances to the principles of honorable living and the best wishes of a large group of friends are extended to them. In addition to the greetings received by them in honor of their anniversary, a number of gold pieces were presented to them, also a number of floral bouquets.
