May 13, 1920 - Carroll Times - Henry Otto, whose death was mentioned in the last issue of the Carroll Times, was born in the Government District of Cologne, Germany, February 28, 1829, and died at St. Anthony's hospital in this city May 2, 1920, at the age of 91 years, 2 months and 3 days. He spent his early years at home, attending the public school until the age of fifteen, when he went into the employ of his uncle where he learned the shoemaker's trade and became an expert at his vocation. In his day everyone wore shoes made to order. At the age of twenty he was drafted into the army of the kaiser and served in Berlin with a regiment called the Guards, which was the Queen's regiment. He was on duty at the palace where he got an inside view of the royal life and saw the ex-kaiser from boyhood to young man. After serving the usual time he returned to the Rheinland where he followed his trade. In 1861 he was united in marriage to Miss Gertrude Albertz, and in 1873 together with his wife and four small children, emigrated to America. They lived one year at Boone, Iowa, before going to Sheridan township where they moved to the farm which was their home until 1897 when he retired from farming and moved to this city. Mrs. Otto died here December 10, 1916, and after that time he made his home with his son, Adolph, until the infirmities of old age compelled him to seek trained assistance and he entered St. Anthony's hospital, where he received every care that science and experience could give. He leaves to mourn his loss eight children and sixty-one grandchildren. The children are as follows: Helen (Mrs. James Bennett), Long Pine, Nebraska; Katherine (Mrs. George Hillman), Clifton, New Jersey; Christena, now Sister Hildegard; Adolph and Henry, of Carroll; Will, of Lake City; Anna (Mrs. Ben Underberg), Kent, Minnesota; Mary (Mrs. Edward Thielke), Rock Island, Illinois. One son, Michael, preceded him to a better life in 1907 at St. Mary's, Kansas. Mr. Otto was a good citizen and was one of the pioneers who helped develop this country and make it the place it is today. He was a devout member of the Catholic church and was ever interested in his home and children. His life was a busy and useful one.
