Torgrud Henry Peterson Torgrud was born July 15th, 1853, at Honefass, Norway, and died at his farm home up in North Preston on the morning of November 1st , 1918, aged 65 years, 3 months and 17 days. When he was seven years of age he came to America with his parents who located at Highland Prairie, Fillmore County, MN. He was confirmed at the Overlands Norwegian Lutheran church at the age of sixteen. On November 9th 1877, at Whalen, MN, he was united in marriage to Miss Karen Setbacken, who has been his companion all these years. Mr. and Mrs. Torgrud first located on a homestead near Canby, MN, where they stood the struggle with new settlers for 10 years, when they sold out and came to South Dakota. They purchased a new farm up in North Preston, near this place, which has continued to be the family home to this date. To this union were born twelve children, all living except two who died in infancy. Besides the bereaved wife, he leaves to mourn their loss, three sons and seven daughters namely: Mrs. L. T. Felland of Minneapolis, MN; Helmer and John of Lake Preston; Mrs. A. N. Rosendahl of Landa, ND; Mrs O. E. Sater of Fennwood, Sask, Canada; Edward of Huron; Mrs. G. G. Johnson of Arlington; and Julia, Florence and Helen who still reside at home, besides, he is survived by two brothers and four sisters. The sympathy of all is extended to the family. Mr. Torgrud suffered from heart trouble for several years, which with an attack of Spanish influenza only the day before, caused his sudden death on Friday morning, November 1st, he will not only be greatly missed by his family, but by many friends and neighbors. He helped to establish the North Preston Lutheran church twenty-six years ago and continued his church and community interest as long as he lived. The funeral services were held at the home at 2 o'clock on Monday, November 4th, conducted by Rev. Adisvik of Arlington burial took place in the home church cemetery. Mrs. Torgurd and family wish to thank the neighbors and friends for their kindness and help and for the beautiful floral offerings.
