Mr. Rishton crossed the ocean in 1845 and came here in 1850. Mrs. Rishton arrived as a little girl a year later. both endured all of the hardships of pioneer life. Mr. Rishton recalls the fact that for six weeks in the summer of one of those early years he and his father's family lived solely upon "pigweed" and baked squash. The interval was between the time when their previous year's stock of provisions had been exhausted and the maturity of a new crop. In the interval between his young manhood and his marriage to Miss Forsyth, Mr. Rishton crossed the Rocky Mountains six times with ox teams and mule trains. He had many thrilling experiences and narrow escapes. He traveled 450 miles alone with his wife and one child through a country with hostile Indians.
