HENRY LEHMAN DIES AT HIS HOME ON THE SOUTH DIVIDE
Henry S. Lehman was born Dec. 15, 1854, at Savannah Landing, the present site of St. Joseph, Mo., and departed this life at his home near Idalia, Colo., on the afternoon of Oct. 18, 1923, at the age of 68 years, 10 months, and three days. He was baptized when but three months old, at the time of his father's funeral. At the age of two years, in 1856, he and other members of the family moved to Nemaha County, Kansas, where in the vacinity of Bern he grew to manhood. In 1884 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary B. Minger. This union was blessed with two sons and a daughter, the daughter Grace, dying in infancy. In 1885 Mr. Lehman moved with his family to Colorado, and in October of the same year located on a farm near Idalia, Yuma County, where he lived together with his family until his recent death. He was one of the pioneers in this region, coming to this part of the country when it was still a vast open prairie where the antelope and other wild animals roamed at will. He was for many years a leading citizen and farmer of the community in which he lived and was held in high esteem by his neighbors and friends. He was widely known and loved, which fact was attested by the unusually large attendance at the funeral services, which were held at the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church near Idalia on Sunday, Oct. 21, conducted by the pastor, Rev. G. Kreutzenstein, assisted by Rev. T. A. Marks of the Evangelical Church, with which church Mr. Lehman united at the age of 14 years. He leaves to mourn his sudden and very unexpected departure his grief-stricken wife and companion; two sons, Eads and Amer; an only brother, W. H. Lehman, of Trempeleau, Wis., the only remaining member of a family of 10 children, besides many other relatives, friends and neighbors, Relatives attending the funeral from out of the state were the brother from Wisconsin and his son Ray; Edson and Mae Lehman of Bern, Kansas, a nephew and niece of the departed; Mrs. Isaac Edie of Pawnee City, Neb., sister of Mrs. Lehman: and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Simon of Steinauer, Neb., nephew and niece of Mrs. Lehnian. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery near the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Another friend is called away, Another warning had Another home made desolate, And other hearts made sad.
Wray Rattler October 25, 1923 Transcribed by Carol Moore.
